Supergoop Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion Spf 40 Pa+++

Best sunscreens for oily skin: 2020| Dr Dray

This isnt my top favorite and it takes a bit of time to blend into my skin, but it does have a nice satin finish to it. Honestly, a lot of mineral sunscreens are like that by nature. This article on the Supergoop site will explain why. But this one is still better than a lot of the other ones Ive tried.

Unsun Mineral Sunscreen Spf 30

Hall called Unsun her “favorite mineral-tinted sunscreen.” Katonya Breaux, Frank Ocean’s mom, created the line of tinted sunscreen with darker skin tones in mind. The company said the shade Medium/Dark works for olive-to-chocolate complexions and offers a sheer wash of coverage to your skin. Shea butter and coconut, safflower plus olive oils keep your skin well-moisturized and aloe leaf juice calms inflammation. The sunscreen works for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and if you value clean and natural beauty products, consider that Unsun is available to shop at Credo Beauty, which said it banned products that include any of the 2,700 ingredients found on their “dirty list.”

Best Alternative Formula: Mele No Shade Sunscreen Oil Spf 30

If you feel like traditional sunscreen makes your skin feel tight and dry, you’ll love this silky option. It’s a sheer oil that goes on clear, no matter if you have caramel-colored skin or a deep mocha brown. As for the oil itself, it’s super lightweight and leaves the skin with a pleasant dew-like finish without looking too shiny. Dr. Zeichner likes this pick for delivering chemical protection to the skin sans greasiness. “The oil base is soothing and hydrating, but will not leave the skin feeling heavy,” he says. “And the formula provides broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.”

Skinmedica’s Total Defense + Repair Spf 34

Downie’s “absolute favorite” sunscreen is SkinMedica Total Defense. It offers UVA/UVB protection and a blend of antioxidants to help protect against infrared waves, an invisible light ray that we interpret as heat. Downie said infrared heat opening a hot oven, cooking pasta, walking down a hot sidewalk and having heat radiate up to your face and getting in a super hot car can also affect your skin. Infrared heat and infrared rays are harmful to our skin, said Downie. She said very few sunblocks available have infrared protection, and the technology has only been available since about 2017. Most sunblocks have anti-UVA and anti-UVB sun protection. This is one of the only sunblocks on the market that has anti-infrared protection, she added. Downie also said it rubs into her brown skin without leaving behind a white cast. She appreciates it’s hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, as well, because she has extra sensitive skin near her eyes, underlying eczema and acne-prone skin.

Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum Spf 30 Sunscreen

Best Sunscreen For Brown Skin

If nothing or no one can persuade you to wear sunscreen, perhaps Rihanna will. A believer in the importance of sun protection, Riri included this moisturizer with SPF in her debut skin-care launch. The moisturizer and sunscreen duo is lightweight and oil-free, so it won’t feel thick and heavy on your skin, and it incorporates chemical blockers avobenzone, homosalate, and octisalate. With superstar ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, it’ll help you shine bright like a diamond!

“Growing up, my mom would force me to slather myself with this goopy, weird-smelling sunscreen from Walmart whenever we had to leave our air-conditioned apartment and face the brutal Georgia heat. And every time, the sunscreen would proceed to slide off my skin and mingle with my sweat. Cute, right? Aside from finding a formula that doesnt look ashy on my dark brown complexion, I also prefer a water-resistant one for the very reason above. I put Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Water-Light Lotion for Face & Body on nearly every day in the summer, even when I’m nowhere near the pool. It’s smooth, doesn’t leave a cast, and stays put even when I’m melting.”

The prices are approximate and correct at time of writing. Each country uses a different way of notating UVA protection so if a product has no +s it doesnt mean that there is no UVA protection eg USA doesnt use the star or + system, they just write Broad Spectrum on the product. All products listed are broad spectrum to some degree. The links may be affiliate, so if you click and buy you will be helping out the Skincare with Friends podcast, which we really appreciate.

Look For Safe Ingredients

Although it might seem as easy as just picking a sunscreen option off the shelf and knowing all the ingredients are safe for your skin, thats not always the case.

In fact, many sunscreens use ingredients that are harmful not only to your skin but to our environment as well.

How do you know if the sunscreen youre considering has safe ingredients? The easiest way to be sure is by choosing a mineral sunscreen as opposed to a chemical sunscreen.

When shopping for sunscreen, you want to take into consideration the differences between mineral vs. chemical sunscreen so that you can choose the safest option for you and your family.

Chemical sunscreen is packed with active ingredients that can be harmful, particularly to sensitive skin. This type of sunscreen works by absorbing directly into your skin.

Mineral sunscreen, on the other hand, features natural ingredients and sits on top of your skin to create a protective barrier against the suns rays. Its only active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both of which are safe for the environment and for sensitive skin.

When it comes to sunscreen ingredients to avoid, keep an eye out for avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, and oxybenzone. If you notice one of these chemicals listed in the ingredients list, its best to keep looking!

Better yet, all of our sunscreen products are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. What more could you ask for!

Combine Sunscreen With Other Sun Protection Methods

Sunscreen is a fantastic method of sun protection, but there are other things you can do to offer yourself and your family even greater protection against the suns rays.

Try wearing long sleeves when possible, adding a wide-brimmed hat to your and your kids outfits, and choosing to sit in a shaded area in addition to applying sunscreen.

This will ensure youve covered all your bases when it comes to sun protection!

What To Look For In Kids Sunscreen

When buying sunscreen, you should also keep ingredients in mind, since freshly applied sunscreen can be harmful to our ocean’s disappearing coral reefs and our coral reefs are beyond important.

As a kid, I never wore sunscreen and believed my deep brown skin was immune from the sun rays. For my own Black child, I’ve admittedly been inconsistent with his sunscreen application because of this harmful falsehood that Black skin doesn’t need to be protected from the sun. With that being said, my 7-year-old son Miles and I tested seven sunscreens for kids over the course of one full month to determine which worked best.

Why Sunscreen Is Important For Dark Skin

If melanin protects you from the sun, then why do people with dark skin need sunscreen at all? Dr. Ife Rodney, board-certified dermatologist and owner of Eternal Dermatology in Maryland, broke down the science of melanin to explain why people of color aren’t immune to sun-related skin issues.

Melanin is “the skin’s defense mechanism against the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays,” Rodney says. “When the skin is exposed to prolonged sunlight, melanocytes located in the epidermis increase melanin production. However, melanin production can take some time. If you’re in the sun for too long, you can get sunburns and sun damage before the melanin can fully protect your skin.”

She added, “We actually all have the same amount of melanocytes, but melanin production is faster in darker skin tones. That however, does not absolve us completely. POC can still develop sun burns, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancers.”

In fact, people with dark skin can even face higher rates of death from skin cancer, since “detection may be too late,” according to Rodney. “These reasons are enough to ensure that all skin colors and types use sunscreen as often as possible.”

Is Spf 30 Good For Brown Skin

A good sunscreen for dark skin will have an SPF of at least 30 or higher to guarantee optimal sun protection. An SPF of 30 blocks 97% of the suns rays. But you cant just put on sunscreen once and then assume youll be good for the day. You need to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, and even more often if youre swimming or sweating.

People with darker skin tones need to use sunscreen just as often as people with lighter skin tones. The melanin in darker skin tones might provide a little bit more protection, but not enough to consider yourself fully protected from the sun. So, sunscreen for darker skin is an absolute necessity.

We Ask Experts For Their Top Tips To Help Keep Melanin Rich Skin Protected This Summer

BEST SUNSCREENS FOR DRY SKIN| DR DRAY

By now you know how important SPF is – the drum that derms, doctors and skinfluencers alike, all bang. And luckily for all, even those of us with brown skin who have previously battled with Casper-like casts, formulas have come a long way. Now, from formulas you can spray over make-up, to protection-laden primers and completely invisible formulas, there really is a sunscreen for everyone. To help you find the right one, we spoke to award winning Cosmetic Doctor Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe.

“SPF is a hugely important step for all skin tones and types and in my opinion one of the most important steps in our routines,” says Dr Ukeleghe, skin care expert and founder of Skn Doctor, a one stop shop for clinically tested skincare, consultations and treatments.

“Despite this, there has been a common misconception for years that dark skin doesn’t require SPF – this is incorrect. SPF is hugely important for protecting your skin from harmful, ageing UV rays and is all the more important when you are using active ingredients like retinols and vitamin c which leaves your skin more sensitive to rays. Whilst melanin does provide complexions with a little more natural protection, you certainly shouldn’t be skipping SPF. More recently, brands are creating chemical SPF formulas which don’t leave a white/ashy cast, which is good to see”

“I’ll be honest and say that slathering on sunscreen every single day still doesn’t feel like second nature to me. Yes, I do it, but I definitely didn’t grow up wearing sunscreen. So I have to remind myself to do this every day. It’s actually one of the beauty lessons I wish my mom would’ve taught me growing up. I used to share the same sentiments as many women of color, which was the misconception that my melanin protected me from the sun. Finding a sunscreen that suits my dark skin tone has been an accomplishment I’m proud of, considering the limited options on the market that’ll leave an unsightly white cast on my complexion. Its formula feels as light as a feather and extremely moisturizing. I sweat a lot, and this is blended with oleosome microspheres, which outlast my extra-sweaty days.”

Isdin Eryfotona Ageless Ultralight Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Spf 50+

The price tag might give you pause, but youre actually getting 3.4 fl oz of product here. If youre the type to buy $25-30 sunscreens at Sephora which are typically 1-1.7 fl oz, then the Isdin price is comparable. But this is a really nice sunscreen that has a number of good things going for it when it comes to those with persistent pigmentation . Its also water resistant up to 40 minutes. There is a very slight cast but it goes away a bit after application. I would say although this is really nice for oily skin, I wouldnt rule it out if you have dry skinif you live in a warmer climate or during the warmer seasons, this might be a nice option if you wear the right moisturizer underneath.

“Admittedly, until my adult years, I was ignorant about the need for sunscreen on brown skin. In my head, melanin was all the protection I needed. It’s safe to say I quickly learned otherwise. And though I had become well aware of the importance of a reliable SPF, I still couldn’t find one that I wanted to wear, one without a white cast that would turn me a hue of purple. After a dozen tries with a dozen different sunscreens proved unsuccessful, I came across Shiseido’s Sun Protection Clear Stick, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Its clear color leaves absolutely no ashy residue and its lightweight texture makes it perfect for these hot summer months. Though it’s sad that something as essential as SPF is rarely made with women of color in mind, I’m thankful for Shiseido for creating a sunscreen that I’m actually excited to apply.”

There’s a plethora of different types of sunscreen to shop online and in-person spray sunscreen, acne-prone sunscreen, sunscreen for indoors and so on. The only problem? My favorite sunblock , recently changed its formula in order to abide by Hawaii’s reef-safe mandate. The mattifying sunscreen formula I loved no longer disappears into my caramel complexion and now leaves behind a dreaded white cast. Understanding the importance of wearing sunscreen, I began searching for a replacement. After spending weeks testing out new formulas, I wasn’t totally in love with any of the options I came across because they either didn’t work with my oily skin or made me look like a ghost.

Realizing white cast from sunscreen isn’t an isolated occurrence, I felt compelled to reach out to a few Black beauty editors, and board-certified dermatologists, to determine the best sunscreens for darker skin tones. Of course, the medical experts we consulted make a case for why Black people should apply sunscreen and their reasoning goes beyond the risk of skin cancer.

The sun’s rays don’t discriminate, but some of the SPFs on the market do.
