A suggestion from one who went through a biopsy on my nose followed by Mohs. Have them use Lidocaine cream to numb the area before the needle. Less painful. No fun for sure but at least it doesn’t hurt as much for the nose biopsy. – Donna

After Skin Cancer Surgery
Before you go home, your nurse will explain how to take care of the wound and the dressing. If necessary, they can arrange for a district nurse to change your dressing at home. Or they may advise you to go to your GP or come back to hospital to have the dressing changed.
If you have stitches, they are usually removed 5 to 14 days after surgery or once the wound has healed. Sometimes surgeons use dissolvable stitches that do not need to be removed.
If you had a skin graft or skin flap surgery, it’s important to try to rest for the first couple of weeks after surgery. You need to allow time for the skin graft or skin flap to heal properly.

How Well It Works
Standard excision treatment for basal cell carcinoma less than 20 mm wide has cure rates as high as 95 out of 100 people, when done with 4 mm margins.footnote 1 When standard excision is used to treat squamous cell carcinoma, about 92 out of 100 people are cured. Skin Grafting And Reconstructive Surgery

In these cases, healthy skin can be taken from another part of the body and grafted over the wound to help it heal and to restore the appearance of the affected area. Other reconstructive surgical procedures, such as moving ‘flaps’ of nearby skin over the wound, can also be helpful in some cases.

How Is Basal Cell Skin Cancer Treated When It Grows Deep Or Spreads
While this skin cancer tends to grow slowly, early treatment is recommended. Without treatment, BCC can grow deep, destroying what lies in its way. This can be disfiguring. The medical term for this is advanced basal cell carcinoma.
Its also possible for BCC to spread to other parts of your body, but this is rare. When the cancer spreads, it typically travels first to the lymph nodes closest to the tumor. From there, it tends to spread through the blood to bones, the lungs, and other parts of the skin. When this skin cancer spreads, it is called metastatic basal cell carcinoma.
For cancer that has grown deep or spread to the closest lymph nodes, treatment may involve:

How Are Skin Grafts Created
Grafts are used to repair larger wounds. They can also be used for repairs in areas where the skin is too tight to make into a flap. Examples include the ears, elbows, and ankles.6 There are two basic types of skin graft for skin cancer repairs:
- Split thickness: The top layer of skin and part of the second layer are shaved from the donor site. This section of skin is then applied to the recipient site.7
- Full thickness: The epidermis and the entire dermis are removed from the donor site.7
The donor site is chosen to match the skin at the recipient site.5 If possible, the graft is taken from an area that is not usually visible in public. For example, the donor site may be on the front thigh or behind the ear.5,7
The donor site may hurt more than the recipient site. This is because of exposed nerve endings at the donor site. When your surgeon removes a split thickness skin graft, the donor site may be covered with gauze and left to heal on its own. When a full thickness graft is taken, your surgeon will close the donor site with stitches.

You may also receive palliative treatments similar to those meant to get rid of the cancer, such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy.
Before treatment begins, talk with your doctor about the goals of each treatment in the treatment plan. You should also talk about the possible side effects of the specific treatment plan and palliative care options.
Remission And The Chance Of Recurrence
A remission is when cancer cannot be detected in the body and there are no symptoms. This may also be called having no evidence of disease or NED.
A remission may be temporary or permanent. This uncertainty causes many people to worry that the cancer will come back. While many remissions are permanent, it is important to talk with your doctor about the possibility of the cancer returning. If skin cancer returns after the original treatment, it is called recurrent cancer. It may come back in the same place , nearby , or in another place . When this occurs, a new cycle of testing will begin again to learn as much as possible about the recurrence. After this testing is done, you and your doctor will talk about the treatment options. Often the treatment plan will include the treatments described above. Your doctor may suggest clinical trials that are studying new ways to treat this type of recurrent cancer. Whichever treatment plan you choose, palliative care will be important for relieving symptoms and side effects.

How Are Tumors Excised From Complex Areas
Excision of tumors on some parts of the body can be tricky. Tricky areas include the face, ear, scalp, sole of the foot, fingers, and toes. If tumors are excised from these areas, it may not be possible to stretch the skin over the site to close it. Special repairs may be needed.1 Examples of repair procedures are skin grafts or flaps. Margins in these areas may be smaller.3
Skin Color And Being Exposed To Sunlight Can Increase The Risk Of Basal Cell Carcinoma And Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Skin
Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor. Having a risk factor does not mean that you will get cancer not having risk factors doesnt mean that you will not get cancer. Talk with your doctor if you think you may be at risk.
Risk factors for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin include the following:
- Being exposed to natural sunlight or artificial sunlight over long periods of time.
- Having a fair complexion, which includes the following:
- Fair skin that freckles and burns easily, does not tan, or tans poorly.
- Blue, green, or other light-colored eyes.
- Red or blond hair.
Although having a fair complexion is a risk factor for skin cancer, people of all skin colors can get skin cancer.
Older age is the main risk factor for most cancers. The chance of getting cancer increases as you get older.
