Create Your Own Shade

Sunscreen should be your first defense against the suns harmful rays no matter where you arebut it shouldnt be your only one. If youre outside and its possible to step into the shade , do it.

It makes a huge difference, says Dr. Chon, who also recommends using sun-protective clothing as a form of shade, especially if youre in the sun for a long time. A lot of brands like Athleta and Lululemon have UPF-rated clothes now.

If you love to go running or hiking, try a rashguard. Theyre super effective and cover all those areas that are hard to reach like your shoulders, back, and neck, says Dr. Chon.

Guidelines For Avoiding The Sun And Uv Radiation

The following are some specific guidelines for avoiding excessive sun exposure:

  • Properly use sunscreens that block out both UVA and UVB radiation with at least SPF 30. DO NOT rely on sunscreen alone for sun protection. Also wear protective clothing and sunglasses.
  • Avoid sun exposure, particularly during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when UV rays are the strongest.
  • Use precautions, even on cloudy days. Clouds and haze do not protect you from the sun, and in some cases may intensify UVB rays.
  • Avoid reflective surfaces such as water, sand, concrete, and white-painted areas.
  • UV intensity depends on the angle of the sun, not heat or brightness. The dangers are greater closer to the start of summer.
  • Skin burns up to 4 times faster at higher altitudes than at sea level.
  • Avoid sun lamps, tanning beds, and tanning salons. The machines use mostly high-output UVA rays.

What Is Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the abnormal and rapid growth of skin cells. Skin cancer can be categorized into three main types:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. BCC occurs in the outermost layer of your skin and will often cause skin cancer symptoms such as open sores, red patches, shiny bumps or scars. It rarely metastasizes past the original tumor site. However, it is still malignant and if you suspect you may have BCC, you should still see your health care provider. Sources report that up to three million cases are diagnosed each year.

Squamous cell carcinoma occurs when abnormal cells start to grow uncontrollably in the upper layers of the skin. SCC skin cancer symptoms include open sores, scaly red patches and the characteristic elevated growth with a central hole in fact, SCC is also referred to as the rat-bite tumor because of this distinctive appearance. SCC can also bleed or crust and can lead to death if allowed to grow. More than one million cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. and about 8,800 people die from it each year.

Melanoma is not the most common skin cancer, but it is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, These cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Melanoma kills over 10,000 people in the U.S. annually.

HOW TO PREVENT CANCER NATURALLY
1 User Review

My 80 year old dad recently had 3 health issues going on. Gallbladder needed to be removed, a heart valve replacement as well as a cancerous growth all at the same time. Each doctor said the other issue had to be dealt with first so for 6 weeks his leg cancer grew until the point of doctor saying it required anesthesia and a huge area to be cut out! Because he is 80 I knew he needed a remedy that was easy to use and with something available in the kitchen.

He was becoming increasingly anxious about the painful cancer continuing to grow. After watching a youtube video, I offered a remedy to him and said I could not guarantee results but it was his decision alone. I was only “sharing a solution. The remedy is 50/50 baking SODA and coconut oil, applied to area under a bandaid. I suggested changing the bandaid 2x a day. He decided to take a chance a did it diligently.

So the picture with the purple dots is the area his doctor said would have to cut out under general anesthesia. The other photo is after the treatment.

HI U OLE PATOOTS DOIN, ORH here, and a MY-BAD story.

I have had skin cancers forever and should know better. Most I find and solve with CURADERM. Have done that for years. But I do go to a Dermatologist and let him examine me about once a year. I went in November and he found two on my back and surgically removed them. He said my face was good. I felt a spot below my right eye that felt crusty along with two other minor spots nearby.

Vitamin D Fortified Foods

Research shows that adequate vitamin D intake is associated with a decreased risk of melanoma, and that people who are vitamin D deficient have a poorer outcome when diagnosed with melanoma. Include vitamin D fortified foods in your diet such as milk, yogurt, cereal, and juice. The include fish such as sardines, salmon, and tuna, as well as egg yolks and liver.

Ask Your Doc About Sun

If you frequently eat nutrient-rich produce in a wide array of colors, youre already providing your body with lots of supportive vitamins and minerals. But some supplements might help kick your skin protection up a little bit.

Dr. Herman says that research currently supports two supplements. The first is Heliocare, which contains a plant extract called Polypodium leucotomos extract that may help protect your skin from free radicals. Then, theres niacin , which may reduce the risk of squamous-cell and basal-cell skin cancers. Before trying a new supplement, talk to your dermatologist to see if it make sense for you.

Watch For Abnormal Moles

Checking your skin regularly may help you spot any new or abnormal moles or other growths and show them to your doctor before they even have a chance to turn into skin cancer.

Certain types of moles are more likely to develop into melanoma . If you have moles, depending on how they look, your doctor may want to watch them closely with regular exams or may remove some of them if they have features that suggest they might change into a melanoma.

Routine removal of many moles is not usually recommended as a way to prevent melanoma. Some melanomas develop from moles, but most do not. If you have many moles, getting careful, routine exams by a dermatologist, along with doing monthly skin self-exams are, might be recommended.

If you find a new, unusual, or changing mole, you should have it checked by a doctor experienced in recognizing skin cancers. See Signs and Symptoms of Melanoma Skin Cancer for descriptions of what to look for.

Some medicines can cause changes in your skin that make it more sensitive to ultraviolet exposure. Common culprits include certain cholesterol meds, antibiotics, antifungals, NSAIDS, and even birth control pills. Not everyone reacts the same way to drugs, so check this list of medications from the FDA and take extra preventive steps if you happen to be taking one of them. When in doubt, make sure you go over any potential side effects with your doctor or pharmacist.

Occupational Radiation And Chemical Exposure

Occupational exposure to radiation and some chemicals in health care or industrial settings may increase the risk for melanoma. However, the evidence for this increased risk is not very strong. Airline pilots have been found to have an increased risk for melanoma. It is uncertain, however, whether this higher risk is from excessive exposure to ionizing radiation at high altitudes, or because they have more opportunity to spend time in sunny regions.

Following the plant-based Mediterranean diet has been shown to protect against skin cancer, so consider a salad with a base of dark leafy greens for a sun-savvy lunch. Vegetables are rich in antioxidants like vitamins C and A, which can protect skin from damage and help the skin to repair, says registered dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, author of 2 Day Diabetes Diet. Fighting against damage from the suns rays may be why these foods offer skin cancer protection. These antioxidants prevent free-radical-mediated DNA damage, as well as cancerous growths that arise as a result of UV radiationotherwise known as sun exposure, Dr. Bowe adds. Eat more summer superfoods for skin that protects and glows.

CANCER: How To Prevent And Reverse Cancer Naturally!

A combination of imaging approaches should be considered for early melanoma detection and diagnosis, since each technique alone has limitations. Some doctors now use various scope-like devices that enhance the visualization of the suspected lesion. These tools are more likely to be helpful for those with atypical nevi or history of melanoma.

MelaFind is a proprietary tool used to visually detect melanoma and it was approved for use by the FDA. It uses pattern recognition of certain factors that would lead a dermatologist to more highly suspect a lesion and perform a biopsy.

Take Action No Matter What Color Your Skin Is

Skin cancer can happen in all ethnicities, including persons of color, says Yolanda Lenzy, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and licensed cosmetologist in Chicopee, MA. In fact, reggae star Bob Marley died from malignant melanoma on his foot.

While its true that more skin pigmentation might lower your risk of developing skin cancer, research shows that people of color die from melanoma at a higher rate than white people. On top of that, consider what sun damage can do to your skin overall, says Susan Chon, M.D., professor of dermatology at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. That may be dyspigmentation, wrinkles, or uneven color.
