Raise your hand if youre oily and makeup slides right off your face! Insert ALL the raising hand emojis over here. I never really understood primers until more recently. How crazy right? I just didnt realize that makeup wasnt supposed to stay on. Silly, I know. Oftentimes I would joke that my makeup just slides off my face. And it really does. There was a part of me that just thought the foundation should work better, not that I needed a better primer to keep it on.
Thanks to YouTube and Instagram I learned more and more about makeup. And as I am the oiliest person I know, Im here to share a few favorite primers that work really well for oily complexions. And in several price points too from a solid drugstore primer find to mid-range prices and a few more pricy ones. But thankfully a little goes a long way with primers so youll get a ton of use out of these products.
I wanted to test out a few products over the last few months and finally have a good list of primers I personally love. For my big primer testing, I ended up actually picking up a few of those smaller mini sizes they offer. Nearly all of the ones I bought from Sephora had that option which I think was such a great way to test these out. Plus, since you use so little, it really is a solid way to try some new products. And it makes it perfect for travel size makeup.
Smoothes Out The Skin And Conceals Pores
Girls with oily skin often struggle with the appearance of large pores. Applying foundation directly to this area, will highlight the pores already there. That’s why a makeup primer for oily skin is formulated with essentials used for disguising wrinkles, pores, and other signs of ageing. This will keep your foundation from clogging your pores.

Best Setting Powders & Sprays
Once you use your primer and then apply all of your makeup, its also key to set it all. Its an extra bit of insurance policy for us oily people. Ive used a few over the years but would have to say only two have stuck around in my makeup bag.
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
A few sprays of this on top of your makeup help to set everything and keep things in check. And a little insider trick, you can use a bit of it on a spoolie has a hairspray to set your brows or any flyaways on your part.
How Else Can I Minimize Pores And Oiliness
A primer isn’t the only way that you can kick shine and enlarged pores to the curb. Flor says it starts with your skincare, such as being careful with your moisturizer placement. “Apply moisturizer in places where hydration is needed only,” says Flor. “I see people putting moisturizer all over the face and that’s great, but leave that for your night time routine.
If you’re worried about oiliness and shine, you want to focus more on just priming the skin and applying the moisturizer in areas that need it. I also recommend using mattifying lotions.”
She also suggests using a pore-refining toner to help battle unwanted texture. Her favorite is The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Mattifying Toner, which exfoliates dead skin cells and soaks up excess oil.
In terms of makeup, Flor says that having a good setting powder or mattifying finishing spray on hand will also help. “Makeup can start to look cakey after a few hours,” says Flor. “So by setting the makeup in place, you can minimize the pores and prevent buildup.” Beefing up your glam routine with a longwearing matte foundation is also a good idea, especially if you’re really prone to oiliness.
