What Is The Difference Between Common Moles And Atypical Moles
Most moles are harmless, and these are known as common moles. They seldom become cancer, but there is more risk of cancer if you have more than 50 moles. Less common are atypical moles known as dysplastic nevi.
A common mole can be flat or a bump. Normal moles are one color: brown, tan, skin-toned, pink, red, blue or clear, and their size is smaller than 1/4 inch across. Common moles also are round shaped, even on both sides, and have a distinct, un-blurred border that separates them from the surrounding skin. Normal moles dont change.
Atypical moles can also be flat or raised, but they measure more than 1/4 inch across and are unevenly shaped with irregular borders that may fade away into the skin surrounding the mole. Atypical moles are a combination of colors, and their surface may be smooth, uneven, rough, flaky, or bumpy.
In What Ways Can An Itchy Mole Be Treated
If you notice changes to color, size, or shape of any moles, you should have them checked by a doctor. If you have a mole that bleeds, itches, feels tender, or its painful, its important to see a doctor as soon as possible. Most moles that are itchy, painful, large or have a potential for being cancerous are typically removed.

Largest Diameter Length Of Skin Lesion
An analysis of the association between the largest diameter length of skin lesions and itch or pain revealed a clear association between larger diameter length and increasing pain and itch intensity. In particular, the most painful lesions had a mean diameter of 2.19 cm compared with a mean diameter of 1.59 in painless lesions . The itchiest lesions had a mean diameter of 2.04 cm compared with a mean diameter of 1.55 in lesions that were not itchy .
Is Skin Cancer Itchy
An itchy skin rash could be a warning sign of skin cancer. But, itching is very common and can occur for many reasons other than cancer. Some possible explanations include dry skin, eczema, contact dermatitis, an insect bite or an allergic reaction to a medication, cosmetic or poison ivy.
Due to the wide range of potential causes, itchy skin alone is usually not a reason to be overly concerned. Unless the itching is very bothersome or lasts beyond a few days, home remedies such as applying an anti-itch cream, moisturizer or cool compress may be all that is needed to improve comfort until the itching resolves on its own.

Early detection makes a difference
99%5-year survival rate for patients in the U.S. whose melanoma is detected early. The survival rate drops to 66% if the disease reaches the lymph nodes and27% if it spreads to distant organs.
Red White And Blue Hues
While melanomas are often depicted as dark-brown moles, they can actually present in a variety of colors. The cancer may have a blue tint to it, from deeper pigmentation, says Robert Brodell, M.D., a professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Or it can appear red, the result of an immune response. The body is attacking it. It knows it’s abnormal and it’s trying to defend itself, and you get inflammation, Brodell explains.
It’s also possible for a melanoma to look like a rash, says Quigley, and take on a pink hue. But when the spot doesn’t get better with creams and other treatments that normally nix a rash, you need to check and make sure that that’s not a skin cancer, she says.
Another sign of a melanoma can be lack of color. Some of these cancerous spots lose their pigmentation completely or partially, leaving a halo of white around a darker spot.
“And that’s something that gives us a little concern, Buchbinder says. Was the body recognizing something like a melanoma that was going wrong, and in its process of destroying the melanoma it destroyed some of the normal melanocytes in that area? It’s just one of those things that may kind of make you look a little closer at something.

Perhaps You Already Know That An Itching Mole Is A Possible Symptom Of Melanoma
But what most medical sites do not say is whether or not this itching is almost always, or usually, or sometimes or rarely accompanied by other symptoms of a cancerous mole or lesionsuch as crusting, bleeding, darkening or an increase in size.
While itching is occasionally something that my patients relate as the symptom that brought them in for a mole or even a melanoma, it is very uncommon, actually, says Dr. Joel Schlessinger, MD, a board certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon who has a private practice in Omaha, NE.
That is why melanoma is so scary, as there can be no symptoms at all other than the changes in color. Moles, on the other hand, do tend to have times that they itch and even bleed.
Interestingly, I have often seen patients who have presented with a very significant melanoma and they go so far as to state that they didnt come in because it wasnt itching yet.
The important thing to remember here is that itch as a symptom that might be worth listening to is a very poor way to decide whether or not to see the dermatologist for a suspicious mole.
While it may be a part of or reason to suspect that a mole is changing to be irritated, it doesnt often correlate with the onset of a melanoma.
If you suspect that a mole is itching, first be sure that its actually the spot thats presenting with this symptom.
In other words, perhaps theres a tiny bug bite only a centimeter away from it thats the source of the itching.
Other Causes Of Itching
An itchy mole may be a symptom of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Itching may also occur in squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers. Symptoms of these cancers can be easy to overlook and may seem fairly minor at first.
You may notice flaky or crusty patches of skin or rounded red bumps that never seem to go away. Itchy moles may also be a sign of:
- Chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease or liver disease

Is Skin Cancer Tender To The Touch
Skin cancer can hurt, particularly when lesions have gone untreated for a significant period of time. Even lesions that dont puss or bleed can eventually hurt in fact, moles that become tender to the touch may be dangerous and should be examined by a dermatologist as soon as possible. Melanoma is often recognized as moles that change in size, shape, and color, but becoming painful is another warning sign.
What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Melanoma
Melanoma is a skin cancer that can show up on the skin in many ways. It can look like a:

Biological Therapies And Melanoma
Biological therapies are treatments using substances made naturally by the body. Some of these treatments are called immunotherapy because they help the immune system fight the cancer, or they occur naturally as part of the immune system. There are many biological therapies being researched and trialled, which in the future may help treat people with melanoma. They include monoclonal antibodies and vaccine therapy.
Does Skin Cancer Hurt To The Touch
In the case of melanoma, a painless mole may start getting tender, itchy, or painful.
Other skin cancers generally do not hurt to touch until they have advanced to become large. The peculiar absence of pain in a skin sore or a rash often directs the diagnosis toward skin cancer.
When skin cancer has grown considerably, it may ulcerate and cause symptoms, such as pain and discomfort. Skin cancer generally presents as:
- New growth on the skin
- A changing mole or a mole that looks different from others
- A rough or scaly patch on the skin
- A non-healing ulcer or sore or one that keeps coming back
- A mole or spot that has an irregular shape or appearance
- A skin patch or mole with an uneven color
- A brown or black streak under a nail
- A skin patch that itches or bleeds
- A skin patch or growth that is increasing in size
Skin cancer can be detected quite easily since you can see the changes occurring on your skin. Sometimes skin cancer may arise at relatively concealed places, such as inside your mouth, around your genitals, or under a nail. Thus, you must examine yourself thoroughly, preferably in front of a mirror or with the help of your partner, friend, or family member, to look for any signs that may indicate skin cancer.

Look Out For An Ugly Duckling
The Ugly Duckling is another warning sign of melanoma. This recognition strategy is based on the concept that most normal moles on your body resemble one another, while melanomas stand out like ugly ducklings in comparison. This highlights the importance of not just checking for irregularities, but also comparing any suspicious spot to surrounding moles to determine whether it looks different from its neighbors. These ugly duckling lesions or outlier lesions can be larger, smaller, lighter or darker, compared to surrounding moles. Also, isolated lesions without any surrounding moles for comparison are considered ugly ducklings.

If you have a mole, skin growth, skin lesion or dark spot that begins to itch, dont panic but do pay attention. Most moles are harmless, and itching could be the result of irritation from clothing, or even a new detergent. But any itchy mole, growth or wound could also be a symptom of skin cancer either melanoma or, more likely, another form of skin cancer.
What Is Melanoma
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. Of all cancers, skin cancer is the most common form, but melanoma is one of the rarer types. It is also one of the more serious types of skin cancer, as it can spread rapidly to other bodily tissues.
Melanoma occurs when melanocytes, which are the cells that produce melanin, mutate and become cancerous. Melanin is the substance that gives skin and hair their color. Melanoma can start in skin cells or on mucous membranes, such as the lips.
More common forms of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These cancers affect different skin cell types and are less likely to spread than melanoma.
According to the American Cancer Society, there will be around 106,110 new cases of melanoma in the United States in 2021. They suspect that more of these will occur in males than in females. Also, they predict that around 7,180 people will die from melanoma in 2021.

What You Can Do
Check yourself: No matter your risk, examine your skin head-to-toe once a month to identify potential skin cancers early. Take note of existing moles or lesions that grow or change. Learn how to check your skin here.
When in doubt, check it out. Because melanoma can be so dangerous once it advances, follow your instincts and visit your doctor if you see a spot that just doesnt seem right.
Keep in mind that while important, monthly self-exams are not enough. See your dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.
If youve had a melanoma, follow up regularly with your doctor once treatment is complete. Stick to the schedule your doctor recommends so that you will find any recurrence as early as possible.

Does Skin Cancer Itch
Many things can cause an itch: dry skin, poison ivy and bug bites, to name a few. Typically skin cancer isnt the first cause that comes to mind when you itch, but if the irritation persists, it might be something you want a dermatologist to look at.
Itching is not the usual symptom of skin cancer, and an itch, in general, is more commonly caused by something else, says Ilene Rothman, MD, Interim Chair of the Dept. of Dermatology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Surprisingly, sometimes skin cancer can, in fact, itch, and occasionally thats the complaint from patients.

Skin cancer is very common but if detected early, nearly 100 percent of cases may be cured.
Not many studies have been done on itching as a symptom for skin cancers, but a 2014 study found that itching was a prevalent symptom in 36.9% of all non-melanoma skin cancers. The prevalence of itch was highest for patients with squamous cell carcinoma, at 46.6%.
Pain or soreness is probably more common, but the skin has a lot of fine nerve endings, and some irritations to those nerve endings can produce itching or pain, says Dr. Rothman. Some less-common types of skin cancer present with chronic itching, and other cancers, such as lymphoma and leukemia, can sometimes present with itching all over.

Early Warning Signs Of Melanoma
The key to detecting melanoma early is to know what to look for and where to look for it. This isnt always easy, as melanoma can be a master of disguise. It may look like an age spot, a bruise, a sore, a cyst, a scar or a dark line beneath your nail. You may not feel a melanoma, but there are times that it may itch, hurt or bleed.
The ABCDE method may help you determine whether an abnormal skin growth may be melanoma:
- A is for asymmetry: Does the mark look different on each half?
- B is for border: Are the edges jagged or irregular?
- C is for color: Is your lesion uneven in color with specks of black, brown and tan?
- D is for diameter: Is your lesion getting larger?
- E is for evolving or elevation: Has your lesion changed in size, shape or texture over the past few weeks or months?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, or even maybe, see a dermatologist for a proper evaluation. The only way to be sure whether a mole is melanoma is to visit a doctor.
Other melanoma warning signs may include:
