    Get The Poison Off Fast

The best treatment for poison ivy or oak is to wash with soap in the shower within 5 to 15 minutes of exposure to the plant, Dr. Zug says. In other words, you need to wash off the urushiol long before you see a rash. This is possible, of course, only if you realize your mistake while youre in the woods. Rubbing alcohol also might work. Rubbing alcohol is a solvent that, in order to be effective, must be applied and washed off with a washcloth soon after contact with the plant, Dr. Zug says.

How Apple Cider Vinegar Can Help Your Eczema

Eczema sufferers know how tormenting the itch and scaliness of eczema can be. Yet it comes, uninvited, as an annoying skin condition that affects 10-20% of children, 80% of them developing it before age 5. Eczema also affects adults. Either way, eczema patients just want it gone. Thankfully, most kids will grow up leaving the condition behind.

That said until eczema walks away on its own, eczema sufferers need help and relief. Fast. Nobody likes eczema. It is uncomfortable. It isnt an attractive condition. And it can spread to other parts of the body. So, working on getting eczema under control is the goal. There is no 100% cure. But administering various treatments can be very effective.

Trying what has been proven to work or at least improves eczemas intensity and duration is a good place to focus on. Lets begin with acknowledging skin care. Keeping skin healthy on the outside means keeping it healthy from the inside. Our skin is a porous organ that is designed to protect from the outside and expel toxins that are lurking on the inside of our bodies. The skin also needs to be well-conditioned on the outside. So, it becomes a two-sided goal.

Is It Safe To Use Apple Cider Vinegar On Eczema

Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic, which can benefit the health in certain ways. However, in some cases and when overused, the vinegar can harm the body, for example by causing chemical burns.

Researchers and doctors have documented several examples of these injuries, including that of a child who sustained burns after his mother applied apple cider vinegar to the site of an infection and an adolescent who sustained burns after attempting to use apple cider vinegar to remove facial moles.

Always talk to a doctor before using natural remedies on sites of eczema or other skin conditions. It is important to use small, diluted amounts of vinegar and to check the skin carefully for any reactions.

If a person experiences a burning sensation or any other side effects, they should stop using the vinegar and visit a doctor as soon as possible.

“Many claim ACV can help eczema and acne, fade fine lines, and make skin appear brighter and more youthful,” Gathers says. “People use it as a toner for the skin and to help treat acne prone areas.”

But Dr. Gathers does caution that, despite the number of people who’ve fallen in love with it, these claims are purely anecdotal. “There is actually no good scientific study to prove the skin-healing claims of ACV,” she says. “Before jumping to ACV, I’d recommend getting evaluated by your dermatologist first.”

What Makes Apple Cider Vinegar Suitable For Treating Rashes

Apple cider vinegar is prepared in two steps. In the first step, crushed apples are exposed to yeast to turn them into alcohol by fermenting the sugars. The second step involves adding bacteria to the alcohol solution to ferment the alcohol and turn it into acetic acid.

The whole process makes apple cider vinegar rich in acetic acids and several nutrients, such as vitamins C and B.

When it comes to home remedies for rashes, you simply cannot ignore the benefits of apple cider vinegar. Its acetic acid content helps counter skin infections or skin allergy that could be causing or aggravating the problem.

As a mild acid, apple cider vinegar helps restore and maintain the pH level of the skin. This is important to prevent different skin problems that can cause rashes.

A 2016 study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology reports that pH levels play a role in the breakdown of the skins protective barrier. Acidity levels are also related to a breakdown in the skins microbiota, which helps protect you from bad bacteria.

A 2006 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science demonstrated that skin with pH values below 5.0 is in a better condition than skin with pH values above 5.0, as shown by measuring the biophysical parameters of barrier function, miniaturization, and scaling.

A recent study in 2017 cited that apple cider vinegar possesses antibacterial activity at 25% dilution but is less effective against fungi, yeast , and viruses.

    A Few Tips To Consider

    • Dont forget to dilute the vinegar as it might cause a burning sensation.
    • Always do a patch test before applying vinegar. Sprinkle a few drops on your arm and wait for a few minutes to ensure there isnt any skin irritation.
    • Avoid consuming it orally if you have diabetes, peptic ulcer, or heartburn. The acidic nature of vinegar might worsen the problem.
    • If you are pregnant or nursing, consult a doctor before using vinegar.
    • Avoid using strong perfumes or soaps while using vinegar as they might further irritate your skin.
    • Although apple cider vinegar is touted as the best treatment to get rid of dandruff, avoid using it excessively as it can make your hair brittle.
    • If you have any skin ailment and are using any prescribed medication, consult the doctor before using vinegar along with the medicine. The acidic nature of the vinegar often reacts with the chemicals in the skin ointments and medicines.
    • Always use organic vinegar for best results.

As summer hits, it brings with it a slew of skin problems. Vinegar is a simple and inexpensive approach to treat various skin issues, but only when used correctly. It is a natural and risk-free way to brighten and revitalize your skin. Now that you know the numerous advantages of vinegar for skin, do not delay incorporating the finest quality vinegar into your regular beauty routine. However, to prevent unwanted adverse reactions, it is always best to visit a doctor or perform a patch test before using them.

Apple cider vinegar is made from apples/apple pectin. All vinegars are made from a liquid containing sugar, so apple vinegar begins as water and apples. When exposed to air, yeasts can grow, which cause the sugar to ferment and become alcohol. As it continues to ferment, natural acetic acid bacteria turn the alcohol into acetic acid, which is the main component of vinegar. Acetic acid is what gives vinegar its taste, smell and benefits. The word vinegar means sour wine, and indeed, red wine vinegar is simply red wine thats been acetified.

The Benefits And Risks Of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been used as an alternative treatment for eczema for decades. This is because:

    • The acid in apple cider vinegar may reduce both bacteria and yeast levels in the skin.
    • It may help restore the skin’s natural pH level.

Anecdotally, members of the National Eczema Association have reported that apple cider vinegar baths are soothing to the skin and boost moisture levels in the skin.

    Verywell / Theresa Chiechi

However, apple cider vinegar has not been proven to be an effective treatment for eczema and may even carry some risks. A 2019 study found that a diluted apple cider vinegar bath not only didn’t improve the skin barrier in people with eczema, but it was also associated with skin irritation.

A 2021 study found that a daily bath in a 0.5% apple cider vinegar solution was not effective at altering the bacterial microbiome of the skin in people with eczema.

Apple cider vinegar also carries some risks if it is consumed. The high acidic content of apple cider vinegar can cause damage if used in large quantities, including damage to the mouth, throat, kidneys, and stomach. Apple cider vinegar may also be harmful to pregnant women if consumed in large quantities.

    A Plant Man Picks Tecnu

As a botanist, Dr. Eshbaugh has spent years getting up close and personal with itch-causing plants and knows a thing or two about poison ivy treatment. His favorite remedy for how to treat poison ivy and poison oak? Tecnu Oak-n-Ivy, available over the counter at drugstores. Tecnu works on anything in the Anacardiaceae family the family poison ivy and oak belong to, Dr. Eshbaugh says. You can wash with Tecnu immediately after contact with poison ivy, or you can put it on before you go out into the field. You can even use it after you have already broken out with a rash. Each way seems to work.

    Can Home Remedies Actually Work

The good news is that there are many options for getting dry skin relief that dont require a visit to the doctor or a prescription. That doesnt necessarily mean they will work for you but theyre all worth giving a go.

    Use a humidifier

Running a humidifier at night while you sleep during the winter is a great way to return moisture to your skin, Dr. Khetarpal says.

    Cool off in the shower

You may be a big fan of long, hot showers, particularly when its chilly outside, but Dr. Khetarpal advises making the experience a bit milder. Just like the heat running in your house can pull out moisture from your skin, the heat from a very hot shower can do the same, she says. Try keeping your shower set to a lukewarm level.

    Moisturizer

While using moisturizer may seem obvious, there are still a few tricks to keep in mind. First, be sure to apply right after a shower. Pat dry after your lukewarm shower and apply the moisture within three to five minutes. That helps trap the water in your skin, Dr. Khetarpal says.

Its also important what type of moisturizer you use, she adds. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like ceramide. An over-the-counter ingredient thats often marketed for eczema therapy, she says it helps restore your skin barriers and trap that water in your skin.

    2. Athlete’s foot

Athlete’s foot is also a fungus. Vinegar cures this too! It’s cheap enough to use daily to soak your feet in for a few minutes. If your toenails are infected, it will kill that fungus also! Now, this really does take time, maybe even months, but if you make it a habit to dip your feet into vinegar once a day, you’ll never have to worry about athlete’s foot again.

After dipping your clean feet, just pat them dry and go about your daily routine. You might want to dust your shoes lightly with corn starch to keep your feet nice and dry. Moisturize your feet at night to keep them soft.

    3. Insect bites

Did you know that white vinegar is one of the best treatments for the sting of insect bites? Strangely enough, packing a small bottle of vinegar is a good idea when going to the beach too. Jellyfish stings are stopped instantly with vinegar. Ant bites, bee stings, and other biting or stinging insect sites can be treated with vinegar. Pain go away!

    4. Yeast infections

Some people get yeast infections in the folds of their skin. Straight vinegar is a good way to cure these outbreaks. Just dab it with a soaked cotton ball as in the ringworm treatment. Keep doing this daily and for a few days after the infection clears up. This will eliminate yeast growth on the skin. You can also put a cupful of vinegar in your bathwater for those hard-to-reach places. Consult a medical professional before self-remedying reproductive issues and discomfort internally.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Controversy

In a past Whole Dog Journal article, we discussed some of controversies surrounding apple cider vinegar.

Not everyone agrees that apple cider vinegar should be given to dogs. Pat McKay, canine nutritionist and author of the natural diet book, Reigning Cats and Dogs, doesnt like cider vinegar, and she doesnt mince words she calls it poison.

I believe Peter J. DAmado is on the right track in his book, Eat Right for Your Type, she says. Each of the human blood types has an ideal diet, and the diet recommended for type O most closely resembles the meat-based diet on which dogs evolved. DAmado warns that cider vinegar is very damaging to this type, and I agree with him. I happen to be a type O, and apple cider vinegar has always made me feel miserable. I never knew why until I read his book. I believe dogs have a similar reaction because even small quantities of vinegar can throw their bodies pH out of balance.

Marina Zacharias, pet nutritionist and publisher of Natural Rearing newsletter, shares McKays concern about pH levels. She recommends that owners have their dogs blood and urine tested before adding cider vinegar to their daily diet.

Volhard recommends one teaspoon to one tablespoon twice daily for a 50-pound dog.

Cynthia Foley is a freelance writer in upstate New York. She competes with her Papillons in dog agility.

Acv Is A Safe Reliable Disinfectant

Vinegar is a well-known cleaner and mild disinfectant. Apple cider vinegars cleansing and disinfecting qualities can be good for your dog, too.

Diluted 50-50 with water and applied using a sprayer or a sponge, an apple cider vinegar rinse will remove leftover soap residue after a bath, help alleviate dandruff and itchy skin and leave the coat shiny and soft. To use it as a dandruff preventative, rub the diluted solution into the dogs skin just prior to giving him a bath , then wash it off in the bath.

If youre like most of us, and prefer to minimize your dogs exposure to chemicals, apple cider vinegar might be the answer for a natural flea and/or flying insect repellent. While its not the answer for a flea infestation, it does a good job combatting small incidences, such as added protection on a walk during heavy bug season.

Apple cider vinegar has a cooling sensation, making it a good choice for small topical problems, like burns, bruises, and hot spots. Be careful, though. If the wound is at all open or raw, apple cider vinegar will sting!

Its especially useful to minimize itchy feet and ears. Thoroughly soak the dogs paws in a vinegar-water mix. Use cotton swab or gauze pads soaked in the mixture to clean ears.

A massage with a diluted ACV mix will go a long way toward relieving strained muscles from overactivity. Warm the solution slightly for added benefit.
