Prevalence Differences Between Florida And Rest Of South
The sample size of those in the South was 18,034. When compared with the rest of the South, Floridians reported significantly higher overall skin cancer screening rates in their lifetime. Floridians aged 30 to 39, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 years and older reported significantly higher screening rates than those groups in the rest of the South. Both male and female Floridians had significantly higher screening rates than those in the rest of the South, as well as whites, those of other race, and non-Hispanics. Regardless of educational attainment or health insurance status, Floridians had higher screening rates. When broken down by employment status, Floridians who were employed, unemployed , in the service sector, and blue collar workers had significantly higher screening rates than the rest of the South.

Data on behaviors related to skin cancer risk among the U.S. population are collected by CDC through the national YRBS and NHIS. The national YRBS is a cross-sectional, school-based, biennial survey that monitors the prevalence of health risk behaviors among high school students. It is a nationally representative survey of students in grades 9â12 attending public and private schools. This survey includes questions about using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and indoor tanning. The NHIS is an annual, cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population. Interviews are conducted, mainly in person, with adults aged 18 years or older in each household, with follow-up interviews by telephone when necessary.
A periodic cancer control supplement to the NHIS includes questions about outdoor sun-protective behaviors , indoor tanning, sunburn, and sun sensitivity. This supplement is sponsored by CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and the National Cancer Institute in the National Institutes of Health .

What Causes Skin Cancer
There is evidence that the following are associated with an increased risk of skin cancer: radiation, medicines used to suppress the immune system after organ transplantation, infection with human papilloma virus, exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls, genetics and family history, and skin pigmentation.
There is also strong evidence that:
- drinking water contaminated with arsenic INCREASES the risk of skin cancer
- being tall INCREASES the risk of malignant melanoma
- beta-carotene has no substantial effect on the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer
There is some evidence that:
- drinking coffee might decrease the risk of malignant melanoma in women and might decrease the risk of basal cell carcinoma in men and women
- consuming alcoholic drinks might increase the risk of malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma
- being tall might increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma
- greater birthweight might increase the risk of malignant melanoma

Melanoma Incidence And Mortality
Melanoma of the skin is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in in Australia . In 2016,14,485 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in Australia, and in 2019, 1,415 people died.

In Australia, the age-standardised incidence rate for melanoma increased by 100% between 1982 and 2016, from 26.7 cases per 100,000 persons to 53.5 cases per 100,000 persons,. However, how much of this increase is due to a real increase in the underlying disease, and how much is due to improved detection methods, is unknown. The incidence of melanoma of the skin rose at around 5.0% per year during the 1980s, moderating to 2.8% per year after that up until 2010. It is predicted that the initial rapid increase is partly attributable to individual behaviour and the use of solariums, resulting in increased exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation. The moderated trend seen after the 1980s is consistent with increased awareness of skin cancer and improved sun protective behaviours as a result of extensive skin cancer prevention programs dating back to the 1980s.

Can Black People Prevent Skin Cancer
You can take the following steps in your day-to-day life to help prevent skin cancer:
- Choose shade. Exposure to UV rays causes many types of skin cancer. Because of this, try to stay out of direct sunlight if youre outside.
- Steer clear of certain times. Try to avoid being outside when the sun is strongest, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Instead, aim to be outside either earlier or later in the day.
- Wear sunscreen. If youre going to be out in the sun, make sure to wear sunscreen. Some tips for this include:
- Select a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
- Apply your sunscreen about 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. This allows it to better soak into your skin.
- Dont forget to put sunscreen on areas like the tops of the feet, ears, and back of the neck.
- Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours or after sweating or swimming.
Skin cancer is often diagnosed in its later stages in Black people. Because of this, the outlook can sometimes be poorer.

Landlocked States At Equal Risk
State-wise, the UV-attributable melanoma rates among non-Hispanic whites were found to be as low as 15.1 per 100,000 in Alaska to as high as 65.1 per 100,000 in Hawaii. Various states lining the East and West coast had incidence rates over 25 per 100,000. Some of them were: New Hampshire , New Jersey , Washington , South Carolina , Oregon , Florida , North Carolina , Maryland , California , Georgia , and Delaware
It was also found that many landlocked states were also found to have incidence rates over 25 per 100,000. These included: Colorado , Kentucky , Idaho , Minnesota , Vermont , and Utah .
Interestingly, in comparison to states such as California, Florida, and Hawaiiâwhich have high UV indexesâin several states such as Idaho and Minnesotaâwhere the UV index is lowerâUV-attributable melanoma rates were higher. This could be attributed to the wide range of outdoor activities such as going to beaches, swimming pools, and recreational boating, among others, that are popular in the state.
The study also found that younger females had a larger burden than men for higher UV-attributable melanoma. Suggesting a cause “High indoor tanning prevalence among teen girls in the late 1990s is likely a contributing factor,” said Dr Farhad Islami, lead author of the study.
