Electronic Skin Surface Brachytherapy
Some skin cancers that do not require very deep radiation may be treated with a new form of radiation therapy applied directly to the skin, called electronic skin surface brachytherapy .
In ESSB, we apply smooth, round disks to the skin these disks are attached to a radiation therapy machine. They are left in place for just a few minutes while the radiation is delivered, allowing the tumor to be treated. The approach spares underlying healthy skin from the effects of the radiation.

It is accountable for more than ¾ of all skin cancer related deaths. More than 76,000 cases are expected to develop in the United States in the following year alongside almost 10,000 melanoma related deaths. Melanoma rates have consistently risen in previous years, but learning how to spot it early can save your life.
How To Spot Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer. If you know what to look for, you can spot warning signs of skin cancer early. Finding it early, when its small and has not spread, makes skin cancer much easier to treat.
Some doctors and other health care professionals include skin exams as part of routine health check-ups. Many doctors also recommend that you check your own skin about once a month. Look at your skin in a well-lit room in front of a full-length mirror. Use a hand-held mirror to look at areas that are hard to see.
Use the ABCDE rule to look for some of the common signs of melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer:
AsymmetryOne part of a mole or birthmark doesnt match the other.
BorderThe edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
ColorThe color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
DiameterThe spot is larger than ¼ inch across about the size of a pencil eraser although melanomas can sometimes be smaller than this.
EvolvingThe mole is changing in size, shape, or color.
Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are more common than melanomas, but they are usually very treatable.
Both basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, or cancers, usually grow on parts of the body that get the most sun, such as the face, head, and neck. But they can show up anywhere.

Rare Skin Cancer Touted As Most Lethal

Move over melanoma, a little known form of skin cancer has taken the dubious title of being the most deadly form of the disease.
Scientists in Western Australia discovered that survival rates for people with merkel cell carcinoma were far worse than those for melanoma, which has been widely regarded as the most lethal skin cancer.
They also found that WA had the highest rates of MCC in the world, with 215 cases diagnosed between 1993 and 2007.
Of those cases, just 64 per cent of patients were still alive after five years compared to 90 per cent of those with melanoma.
Lead researcher Professor Lin Fritschi, of the WA Institute for Medical Research, said while MCC was an aggressive form of skin cancer it was still relatively uncommon.
We dont want everyone worried because we had 215 cases in 13 years, she told AAP.
Theres 1000 melanomas a year in WA so its nowhere near as common as melanoma.
But its not well diagnosed and its quite aggressive and it has a high mortality compared to other skin cancers.
MCCs take the form of pink lumps on the skin compared to melanomas which are blackish in colour and are most often found on the face, neck, arm and lower leg.
Like melanomas, MCCs are believed to be caused by sun exposure.
Those most likely to develop MCCs are older men, people with a history of skin cancer and those with suppressed immune systems due to liver and kidney transplants.

Top 10 Deadliest Types Of Cancer
First the good news: Rates of death due to cancer are falling nationwide, according to the American Cancer Society’s 2016 figures.
After peaking back in 1991, when 215 out of every 100,000 Americans died from cancer, that number has since fallen 23%. Among all four of the most common cancerslung, colorectal, breast, and prostatedeath rates are dropping, the American Cancer Society reports.
But while better screening methods and treatments are saving lives, some forms of cancer remain terribly lethal. The cancers on this list are the ones most likely to result in death within 5 years of diagnosis, according to the latest National Cancer Institute statistics.

How Is Skin Cancer Treated
If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, doctors have a variety of ways to remove cancerous cells from the skin so that they do not spread to other healthy tissues. The main treatments include the following:
- Excision: Skin cancers, large or small, can be removed surgicallythe cancer is cut out and the area is then stitched during an operation. More serious cases of cancer that have spread to other areas of the body are treated this way.
- Mohs micrographic surgery: This precise surgery for basal and squamous cell carcinomas involves removing the skin cancer one layer at a time to prevent scarring and to leave nearby healthy cells intact. This is performed by a dermatologic surgeon in the office under a local anesthetic.
- Radiation therapy: An external beam of radiation is targeted precisely at a skin cancer. It is used for patients with non-melanoma skin cancer who are not healthy enough for surgery or have specific reasons why they cant have surgery.
- Medications: There are several medications available now for basal cell cancer that is inoperable and squamous cell cancer of the skin that has spread to other parts of the body. They are not used for routine skin cancers, which represent the vast majority of skin cancers that are diagnosed.

How Often Does Mcc Spread
Around one-third to one-half of people with MCC will experience metastasis, most commonly to the brain, lungs, liver, or bones.
Treatment options for MCC vary based on the stage of the disease and how healthy a patient is overall. Treatment options include:

Medical Treatment For Skin Cancer
Surgical removal is the mainstay of skin cancer treatment for both basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Radiation therapy is the use of a small beam of radiation targeted at the skin lesion. The radiation kills the abnormal cells and destroys the lesion. Radiation therapy can cause irritation or burning of the surrounding normal skin. It can also cause fatigue. These side effects are temporary. In addition, topical chemotherapy creams have been FDA approved for the treatment of certain low-risk nonmelanoma skin cancers. Patients with advanced or many basal cell carcinomas are sometimes prescribed oral pills to block the growth of these cancers. Side effects include muscle spasms, hair loss, taste changes, weight loss and fatigue.
In advanced cases of melanoma, immune therapies, vaccines, or chemotherapy may be used. These treatments are typically offered as clinical trials. Clinical trials are studies of new therapies to see if they can be tolerated and work better than existing therapies.

Basal Cell And Squamous Cell Skin Cancers
Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are by far the most common skin cancers, and actually are more common than any other form of cancer. Because they rarely spread to other parts of the body, basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers are usually less concerning and are treated differently from melanoma. Surgery For Skin Cancer
Small skin cancer lesions may be removed through a variety of techniques, including simple excision , electrodesiccation and curettage , and cryosurgery .
Larger tumors, lesions in high-risk locations, recurrent tumors, and lesions in cosmetically sensitive areas are removed by a technique called Mohs micrographic surgery. For this technique, the surgeon carefully removes tissue, layer by layer, until cancer-free tissue is reached.
Malignant melanoma is treated more aggressively than just surgical removal. To ensure the complete removal of this dangerous malignancy, 1-2 cm of normal-appearing skin surrounding the tumor is also removed. Depending on the thickness of the melanoma, neighboring lymph nodes may also be removed and tested for cancer. The sentinel lymph node biopsy method uses a mildly radioactive substance to identify which lymph nodes are most likely to be affected.

Signs Of Merkel Cell Cancer
Merkel cell cancer growths usually appear as firm, painless bumps or sores. They are found on sun-exposed areas of the body, especially the head, neck, and eyelids. The growths look like pearly pimple-like lumps and may be difficult to recognize. They can be pink, red, or purplish-blue. They usually grow quickly, which is why they are three to five times deadlier than melanoma.
A helpful way to spot Merkel cell cancer is by using the AEIOU tool:
- Asymptomatic: Most lesions are not painful or tender to the touch
- Expanding: Merkel cell cancer growths expand and grow quickly
- Immunocompromised: A compromised immune system puts someone at higher risk
- Older: More common in individuals over age 50
- UV-exposed skin: Lesions are more likely to present on sun-exposed skin

Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment
There are several ways to treat, remove, and destroy basal cell skin cancers. The best option for each patient depends on factors such as tumor size and location, age, general health, and preferences.
Treatment options include one or a combination of these methods:
- Surgery
- Cryotherapy
- Medication to shrink or slow tumor growth
Surgery is the most common treatment, and micrographic surgery is considered to be the gold standard. In that category, Mohs surgery, which allows surgeons to closely examine the margins the area surrounding the tumor to make sure no cancer cells have encroached in those areas has the highest cure rate of all therapies and is especially effective for high-risk basal cell carcinomas.
With Mohs micrographic surgery, the dermatologist is both the surgeon and the pathologist, says Rossi, explaining Mohs surgery. Youre actually examining all the margins and looking at it in real time, whereas in a traditional excision, the surgeon removes the tissue and sends it to a pathologist and they examine only a portion of the margin.
Mohs surgery is often used for large tumors, tumors where the edges are not well-defined, tumors in sensitive locations such as on the head or face, hands, or genital area, and for tumors that have come back after other treatments.

This is the deadliest form of skin cancer that develops in the melanocytes which are pigment cells present in the skin. Melanoma develops when unrepaired DNA damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays or tanning beds triggers a genetic defect or mutation. This mutation causes the skin cells to multiply rapidly forming malignant tumors. Melanoma can also form in the colored part of the eye and very rarely internal organs like the intestines.
Causes
Melanoma occurs when there are changes in pigment producing cells of the body called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce melanin which is responsible for skin and hair color. These changes disrupt the orderly manner in which skin cells form and make the skin cells grow rapidly and out-of-order. The disorderly skin cell formation is what eventually develop into a mass of cancerous tissues. Melanocytes produce melanin which is responsible for skin and hair color. Melanoma often begins as a mole but it may also come in the form of a skin discoloration .
Stages of melanoma
Melanoma has 5 stages. Staging is based on thickness of the lesion, depth of penetration and how far it has spread.
Stage 0 – This type of melanoma is confined to the epidermis. It has not yet reached the dermis
Stage I – This has two subclasses. It is characterized by the thickness of the tumor, presence and number of mitosis and status of any ulceration

A Primer On Skin Cancer
Malignant melanoma, especially in the later stages, is serious and treatment is difficult. Early diagnosis and treatment can increase the survival rate. Nonmelanoma skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Both are common and are almost always cured when found early and treated. Two Skin Cancer Types Are More Common And Less Deadly
There are three common types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer.
Its also the least deadly, DeClerck says.
She explains that basal cell carcinoma typically appears as a shiny pink or red bump on the skin.
This type of skin cancer grows slowly and rarely spreads however, it can grow deeper into the skin and even affect the bone underneath if not treated. Basal cell cancer usually appears in places on the body exposed to the sun.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer.
Squamous cell carcinoma varies in its risk, based on the location and size of the tumor, DeClerck says. Some squamous cell carcinomas are easily treatable and are not life-threatening, however, others can be quite dangerous.
She explains that squamous cell carcinomas look similar to basal cell carcinomas and typically present as a pink bump on the skin.
Squamous cell carcinoma appears on areas exposed to the sun but can spread to other areas of the body.

Leaving Basal Cell Carcinoma Untreated
Basal cell carcinoma is a slow growing cancer, but this doesnt mean it can be ignored. This is the least dangerous form of skin cancer and rarely spreads to other internal parts of the body. While death is a rare consequence there is the potential for disfigurement. Over time basal cell carcinoma can expand and cause ulcers and damage the skin and tissues.
Any damage could be permanent and have an impact on the way you look. Depending on how long the basal cell carcinoma has been present, radiotherapy may be required. This is the most common form of skin cancer and is often found on the face. You may notice a small lump which is shiny or pearl like and this is a sign you should get checked. This type of cancer generally does not cause any pain.
