You see your dermatologist twice a year for a full-body skin exam. You wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses outside and stay under an umbrella at the beach or pool. You always use a broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher sunscreen outdoors and reapply it at least every two hours. You avoid tanning beds like the plague.
After all those precautions, is there anything more you can do to avoid skin cancer? You may think the answer is no. However, one other key strategy you can use is simply to eat as healthy as you can.
Nonmelanoma skin cancers , including basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma , are the most common cancers in America. Some 5.4 million cases of NMSC are treated in more than 3 million people every year, but recent research shows that certain dietary changes may be one way to bring those numbers down.
Grapes Prevent Cancer From Beginning Or Spreading
The skin of red grapes is a particularly rich source of an antioxidant called resveratrol. Grape juice and red wine also contain this antioxidant. According to the National Cancer Institute, resveratrol may be useful in keeping cancer from beginning or spreading. Lab studies have found that it limits the growth of many kinds of cancer cells.
Turmeric May Reduce Cancer Risk
This orange-colored spice, a staple in Indian curries, contains an ingredient called curcumin that may be useful in reducing cancer risk. In a study of ferrets exposed to smoke, markedly different effects were seen with low dose of beta-carotene supplementation versus high dose intake . With high doses of beta-carotene, increased cell proliferation was seen .

Getting a lot of vitamin A in your diet is tied to a lower risk for squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer, a review of studies has found.
Squamous cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer usually found on sun-exposed areas, is easy to treat if found early, although in rare cases it can spread to other tissues.
The researchers, writing in JAMA Dermatology, used detailed health and diet data from 123,570 men and women participating in two long-term studies. They found 3,978 cases of squamous cell cancer over more than 26 years of follow-up.
After controlling for various health factors, including age, other skin cancers and the number of lifetime blistering sunburns, they found that compared with the one-fifth of people with the lowest intake of vitamin A, those in the highest one-fifth had a 17 percent reduced risk for squamous cell cancer.
The senior author, Eunyoung Cho, an associate professor of dermatology at Brown University, said that they had only diet information and did not know whether vitamin supplements would have the same effect. Good sources of vitamin A include eggs, cod liver oil, fortified milk and breakfast cereals, kale, spinach, and orange and yellow fruits and vegetables like cantaloupe and sweet potatoes.

Reduce Sugar And Carbohydrates

Large RCTs of 4 specific AO supplements have not shown efficacy. While research is underway on the potential of other AO supplements, and combinations of AO supplements, it is imperative that future studies also target interventions that integrate dietary AOs in the form of whole foods. In this respect, much can be learned from accomplishments made in the area of diet and hypertension control. Hypertension researchers have had limited results with isolated dietary supplementation but have had success through interventions of whole foods, specifically the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet.
Prior to whole food investigations, one study showed that nutritional supplementation with calcium, magnesium, potassium, or fish oil had no effect on reducing blood pressure . Another study found the effects from calcium supplementation alone to be too small to be clinically significant . Furthermore, magnesium supplementation had equivocal results .
After concluding that dietary supplements lacked promise, a RCT of the DASH diet, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat, was conducted. This diet significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in US adults when compared to a typical American diet . Further studies have shown that the DASH diet in combination with a diet low in sodium is the most effective dietary intervention for reducing blood pressure .
