What Are The Treatments For Metastatic Melanoma
Historically, metastatic and recurrent melanoma have been poorly responsive to chemotherapy. Immunotherapy, in which the body’s own immune system is energized to fight the tumor, has been a focus of research for decades. Squamous Cell Carcinoma Early Stages
The second most common form of cancer in the skin is squamous cell carcinoma. At first, cancer cells appear as flat patches in the skin, often with a rough, scaly, reddish, or brown surface. These abnormal cells slowly grow in sun-exposed areas. Without proper treatment, squamous cell carcinoma can become life-threatening once it has spread and damaged healthy tissue and organs.
What Does Squamous Cell Carcinoma Look Like
Like basal cell carcinoma, SCC is most likely to appear on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face, lips, ears, scalp, shoulders, neck, hands, and forearms. But it can occur in other areas, like the genitals, too, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Look for scaly red patches wart-like growths raised bumps with a central depression or open sores that crust over, itch, or bleed. For darker skinned individuals, SCC is still scaly, but often brown or black in color, notes Dr. Harvey.

Red White And Blue Hues
While melanomas are often depicted as dark-brown moles, they can actually present in a variety of colors. The cancer may have a blue tint to it, from deeper pigmentation, says Robert Brodell, M.D., a professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Or it can appear red, the result of an immune response. The body is attacking it. It knows it’s abnormal and it’s trying to defend itself, and you get inflammation, Brodell explains.

How To Treat Melanoma
Once your doctor has confirmed that your changing mole is indeed melanoma, your treatment will largely depend on how far the cancer has progressed and your overall health.
Melanoma in its earliest stages is often treated by surgery to remove the melanoma and a portion of skin surrounding it, according to the ACS. If the cancer has already progressed to a more advanced stage, your doctor may recommend surgery in conjunction with immunotherapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or newer targeted therapy drugs.

Keep your skin healthy by staying out of the suns harmful UV rays when possible. What Are The Abcdes Of Melanoma
Dermatologists use the ABCDE criteria to analyze moles and check for warning signs that may indicate a melanoma.
A – asymmetry
Normal moles are symmetrical in shape, meaning if you were to draw a line down the middle, both halves would look the same. Asymmetrical moles are abnormal and should be checked by a doctor.

B – borders
Blurred, jagged, or irregular borders are a sign that the mole could be cancerous. If the edges of your mole are uneven, it is good to have it checked out by a doctor.

Colour can help distinguish a normal mole from an abnormal one. Healthy moles usually have one even colour, while irregular moles can contain multiple shades of colour. Thats because all three of the most common skin cancers including the most dangerous, melanoma are 99 percent curable if diagnosed and removed early, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation .
Thats why a regular regimen of self-checks, as well as establishing a relationship with a dermatologist, is important in spotting skin cancer symptoms and treating skin cancer early and effectively.
The SCF recommends scheduling an appointment once a year with a dermatologist for a full-body skin check to screen for skin cancer.
If youre in a higher risk group, such as you have a history of atypical moles, your dermatologist may suggest coming in more often.

The Abcdes Of Melanoma
The first five letters of the alphabet are a guide to help you recognize the warning signs of melanoma.
A is for Asymmetry. Most melanomas are asymmetrical. If you draw a line through the middle of the lesion, the two halves dont match, so it looks different from a round to oval and symmetrical common mole.
B is for Border. Melanoma borders tend to be uneven and may have scalloped or notched edges, while common moles tend to have smoother, more even borders.
C is for Color. Multiple colors are a warning sign. While benign moles are usually a single shade of brown, a melanoma may have different shades of brown, tan or black. As it grows, the colors red, white or blue may also appear.
D is for Diameter or Dark. While its ideal to detect a melanoma when it is small, its a warning sign if a lesion is the size of a pencil eraser or larger. Some experts say it is also important to look for any lesion, no matter what size, that is darker than others. Rare, amelanotic melanomas are colorless.
E is for Evolving. Any change in size, shape, color or elevation of a spot on your skin, or any new symptom in it, such as bleeding, itching or crusting, may be a warning sign of melanoma.
