What Didnt Make The Cut And Why
While some of the below vitamin C serums may do the job, we found a few downfalls that rendered them not making the cut:
- LOréal Revitalift Derm Intensives Vitamin C Serum: Though a fan-favorite, this serum had impractical packaging and made my skin too oily.
- Murad Dark Circle Corrector: While the brands other vitamin C serum had a dreamy texture, this one stung a bit on my face.
- Tru Alchemy Glow Serum: This one was good and effective at brightening the skin, but it wasnt as bright as others we tested. However, we still recommend its formulation for just about any skin type.
- Youth to the People 15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum: While we recommend this formula because it includes caffeine which helps to eliminate dark spots it was a bit too clumpy on my skin.

Can Vitamin C Cause Dry Skin
Were happy to say that Vitamin C does not cause dry skin. On the contrary, it may help your skin stay hydrated.
One of the main roles of Vitamin C is providing support for your skin barrier. Since a damaged skin barrier can play a huge part in dry skin conditions, its important to support your skin barrier every day.
Vitamin C can also provide other benefits for dry skin and may help support a youthful-looking glow.
Collagen is a protein found in your dermis and epidermis that helps your skin hold its shape. Collagen combined with elastin makes up skin elasticity, which describes your skins ability to return to its original shape after being stretched.
As you age, your stores of collagen, elastin, and natural HA deplete. This is a natural part of the skin aging process, but those who want to minimize the effects of aging can use a Vitamin C serum to support youthful-looking skin.
Vitamin C can also help minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation such as dark spots.
As if that wasnt enough, Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant that can support your overall skin health and work to soothe the effects of sun damage.
Speaking of soothing effects, Vitamin C can also help ease breakouts. This helps make them less visible so that your complexion can appear more even.
The Best Vitamin For Over
If your skin has been over-exfoliated, Vitamin C is the way to go. The vitamin is found in nearly every skin care product on the market, making it a popular choice for people with sensitive skin. Vitamin C should be avoided, however, when used with AHAs and BHAs, as these can irritate the skin. Furthermore, Vitamin C has exfoliation properties, making it an excellent choice for use alone.

Which Vitamin C Serum Is Best
When it comes to skincare, choosing a formula largely depends on your skin type, goals and budget. Luckily, the vitamin C serum category runs the gamut in ingredient concentration, price point and consistency. Identifying the right concentration for your skin type will determine how effective your serum will be, and starting slow could help ease your skin into this new regimen. Consider starting with a lower dose of 10% before increasing to 15% and 20%. Additionally, if you have normal or oily skin, consider using L-ascorbic acid, the most potent form of vitamin C. However, if your skin is dry or sensitive, opt for magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, a water-soluble vitamin C, which is less irritating.

Is It Safe To Use Vitamin C With Retinol
In the past, it was thought that you should avoid using vitamin C products with retinoidsvitamin A derivatives that encourage skin cell turnoverat all costs. And thats still sort of true. While theyre both powerful, science-backed skin-care ingredients, they work best in different skin environments, so using them at the same time may make both less effective. And because they both promote cell turnover, experts do still advise against using these two ingredients together, Dr. Hogan says.
But its generally okay to use them on the same day at different times. Experts typically recommend using vitamin C products in the morning and retinoids at night. This route often ends up working out best since retinol products can increase the skins sensitivity to UV rays, which is why its better to save them for p.m. use.

Prevent Wrinkles And Fine Lines
It so depressing, when your skin shows aging signs such as wrinkles. Vitamin C works beautifully to prevent and reduce these unwanted signs by enhancing collagen synthesis in your body. Two study results found that a higher intake of vitamin C was associated with good skin appearances and topical application of vitamin C for 12 weeks has been shown to decrease the wrinkling of the skin, smoothening of the skin, and increase the production of collagen.

Performance & Personal Opinion
A common complaint with The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% is the heaviness of the texture. Lots of people have complained it takes forever to sink in. Others added they cant use anything on top of it or itll slide off.
I agree that the serum takes a couple of minutes to sink in. If it takes more than that for you, you either have very oily skin or youre using too much of it.
I also have a little complaint to add to the list of grievances, too: vitamin C here is all alone. There are no vitamin E and ferulic acid to keep it company.
This matter because vitamin C works a lot better when used together with vitamin E and ferulic acid. These three antioxidants boost each others effectiveness and the protection of your sunscreen!
The good news is that they dont necessarily have to be in the same product. If these antioxidants is in your moisturizer, theyll still help vitamin C do its job better.
I get it why The Ordinary has kept them out. If you want to keep the prices this low, you have to cut corners somewhere. But this skincare geek would be happy to spend £10 more for this serum if it meant vitamin C got to play with its BFFs.
All in all, this is a pretty demanding serum, isnt it? Its ok on its own but it needs prep + friends to work its best. Makes you wonder ifs worth the effort?
When I use a vitamin C serum, my skin is brighter and smoother. Plus, theres plenty of proof the form used here boosts collagen production and fights free radicals.

Tips For Soothing Dry Skin
1. Stay hydrated. Drink 3-4 liters of water per day to battle dry skin.
2. Moisturize frequently. Moisturizing can help repair a damaged skin barrier. Aloe Vera gel is a great natural moisturizer.
3. Take cool or lukewarm water baths. Avoid using hot water which can further dry and irritate your skin.
4. Avoid scratching your dry skin.
5. Apply coconut oil before entering a swimming pool. Chlorine in pool water can act as an irritant to dry skin.

7. Use mild herbal skin care products that are free from chemicals, preservatives, artificial fragrances and colours.
8. Periodical Ayurvedic oil massages can help treat dry skin.

Vedix Tip: To treat your dry skin, include raw ghee in your daily meals. Ghee stimulates agni which in turn ensures good digestion and better nutrition absorption.
The Last Word
While the trend is to switch to a new skin care product to treat your skin issues, the problem might just be an internal one. A deficiency of essential vitamins can render havoc on your skin health. A wholesome nutrient-rich diet along with a good herbal skincare routine can improve your skin immunity, hydration and texture.
Vitamin C For Youthful Skin
Taking vitamin C can help protect your skin from long-term damage caused by the sun, as well as reduce redness. Even though it is not possible to completely repair damaged skin, frequent exfoliation can help improve its appearance.

Is It Ok To Use A Vitamin C Serum Every Day
Unlike AHAs, BHAs or retinol, vitamin C will not make you skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you can add it to your skincare routine every morning and layer it underneath a good SPF30 or 50+ sunscreen.
As for how to apply your vitamin C products, skincare expert Ole Henriksen‘s rule of thumb is to layer according to texture, from the lightest products serums and toners to the thickest and then apply SPF as the last step, he says.

Whats The Research Behind Vitamin C And Vitamin C Serums
Great, right? By now you may be thinking about how to increase vitamin C in your diet to reap these benefits. Unfortunately, simply eating more oranges and cantaloupe isnt going to cut it. Thats because the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, doesnt have blood vessels to send nutrients to the skin cells, research notes.
Vitamin C can, however, be applied topically and thats where vitamin C serums come in. Vitamin C is best known for its ability to neutralize free radicals and improve aging skin, says Joel Schlessinger, MD, a dermatologic surgeon in Omaha, Nebraska. It can also improve collagen and elastin synthesis which can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles help reduce inflammation, provide natural, mild exfoliation and brighten skin.

Skinceuticals Phloretin Cf Serum
Campbell called SkinCeuticals “the gold standard” of topical vitamin C serums. She recommended the Phloretin CF serum for those with oily skin while the C E Ferulic serum is the “best option for all skin types,” especially those with dry and combination skin. She noted both serums are “effective” antioxidant treatments that “help prevent and treat oxidative stress. Phloretin CF serum received a 4.8-star average rating from more than 540 reviews on Dermstore.
Treat Skin The Right Way
Hundreds of creams and topical solutions treat dry skin. However, creams treat the condition from the outside. Can vitamins treat dry skin from the inside? Making sure the body has the vitamins needed is a start. Pharmacists or doctors can recommend the most potent of the vitamins mentioned.

How To Use It
Lets go back to the gritty texture, now. How the heck can you apply sandpaper on your skin and be comfortable with it?
With a little bit of hyaluronic acid. And nope, I dont mean the Sodium Hyaluronate in the formula. Thats not enough.
I wish I had come up with this trick myself, but it was the lovely Laura from The Ordinary who shared it with me when I visited their London shop for a little shopping spree.
How to neutralize the gritty texture:
- Squeeze a tiny bit of The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% on the palm of your hand.
- Add a few drops of your fave hyaluronic acid serum .
- Mix them together and apply the mixture on your skin.
The extra moisture from the hyaluronic acid dissolves the powder and enhances its penetration: problem solved!
I know what youre thinking: do I have to buy another product to make this one work? Yes, you do. I always have an extra hyaluronic acid serum at home, so it was no biggie for me. My friend Paris preps her skin with a hydrating mist first. You can try that, if its more your thing. The point is to get your skin hydrated.
But, yep, you cant use this serum alone. Even if you like what it does for your skin, its too unpleasant to use on its own.
Plus, Im worried about stability when the vitamin C remains on your skin. I guess thats part of the reason why The Ordinary recommends you use it at night.

When I first came across Farmacys Very Cherry Bright Serum, I knew I was going to like it. A serum that includes vitamin C and sweet cherries? Sounds like facial heaven.
As someone with dry skin, this is the best for this skin type because it includes ascorbic acid, acerola cherry and other derivatives of vitamin C that nourished my skin to the T. Though its not the only serum in this edit that works well on dry skin, its a thirst-quenching one I kept resorting back to.
- Pros: Akin to a moisturizer, fresh scent, made my entire skin glow
- Cons: None to speak of
There are many great vitamin C serums in this roundup but Garniers formulation was too good, I just kept thinking about it.
