While we wouldn’t say bar soap is at the forefront of the beauty industry, the classic skincare staple undoubtedly paved the way for cleansing as we know it. And today’s iterations aren’t just for washing your hands and lathering up in the shower. Believe it or not, there are lots of incredible cleansing bars formulated specifically for washing your face.

We asked licensed esthetician Dana Murray of Babe + Beauty for insight. “Bar soaps for the face are tricky because they are usually alkaline in pH , which is a bit high for the skin,” she tells Byrdie. However, she offered some recommendations and tips on what to look for.

As with any cleanser, pay attention to the actives , especially if you have a sensitive complexion or a particular skin concern. Whether you’re tickled by the nostalgia of bar soap, are a skincare minimalist, or are trying to buy products with less wasteful packaging, there’s an option out there for you.

To help you narrow down your choices, we found the best bar soaps currently on the market.

How Soap Is Made

Very simply, soap is made by combining lyesodium hydroxide is used for bar soap) with fats and oils. When combined as liquids in the right proportions and temperature range, they come together to create soap. The ingredients are carefully measured by weight, and the magic happens when blended together at just the right time, as youll see.

I had no interest in soap makingsince a bar of soap is cheap and easy to buyuntil I made my first batch. Its very cool! I see why people get into soap making and open an online soap shop: once you try it, you want to experiment with more and more recipes. And, if you dont have the environmental sensitivities like I do, the option to add botanicals, natural fragrances and colorants, and essential oils offers endless possibilities.

There are tons of soap makers online these days and just as many opinions about the best way to make soap. My suggestion is to find resources you like and can relate to and follow them. Like any hobby, there are endless battles about the finer details but the good news is, there are lots of different ways to make good soap.

Cleansing Bar Tea Tree Therapy Desert Essence

Cleansing Bar Tea Tree Therapy is gentle enough to use on your face, body, and even while shaving.

Hand Soaps That Won

It’s probably not that important to look for antibacterial hand soaps, especially if your primary concern is adding moisture.

“Studies have not found any added health benefits from using soaps containing antibacterial ingredients when compared with plain soap,” Brian Katzowitz, MS, a health communication specialist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ‘s division of foodborne, waterborne, and environmental diseases, previously told us. “Both are equally effective in getting rid of germs.”

With all the endless varieties of body wash available today, youd think bar soap would be considered obsolete.

In fact market research indicates that body wash is the preferred cleanser by far over its solid brethren. But if youre a bar soap type guy, all that research doesnt mean a damn thing.

Soap making has been around for well over 3,000 years, and for some guys the clean feeling you get from a bar of soap cant be replicated with body wash.

Unfortunately, many brands of bar soap can be quite harsh on the skin.

After all, bar soap isnt often associated with the word moisturizing.

In fact most bar soaps have a tendency to strip you of essential oils, leaving the skin feeling cracked and dry. For men with naturally dry skin, this is a recipe for disaster.

What to do then? Read on!

Below is a list of 10 bar soaps that will not dry out your skin, but in fact help moisturize it. Screw you body wash.

Eucerin Skin Calming Body Wash

The Eucerin Skin Calming Body Wash has a pH level of 6.1 and is one of the more moisturizing soaps we tried. Its first ingredient is soybean oil, which has been shown to help skin retain moisture when applied topically. Its second is castor oil, an anti-inflammatory that also promotes moisture. Sure enough, after showering, our testers skin felt cleansed but also soft and supple, and she didnt feel she needed to apply lotion. The downside of fragrance-free Eucerin is the natural odor from the vegetable oils, though it disappeared soon after our tester dried off.

Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Shower Gel

With its low pH level of 4.9, the Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Shower Gel felt great on our testers skin, leaving it both cleansed and hydrated. The Andalou wash has plenty of ingredients that are directly beneficial for sensitive skin: aloe, glycerin, allantoin, coconut extract and argan oil.

The downside of the Andalou wash is its combination of rose water and rosehip oil, which produces a natural rose scent that some people may find overwhelming.

What Types Of Hand Soaps Do Most Dermatologists Recommend

Dermatologists recommend hand soaps that are gentle, mild, and fragrance-free, meaning they don’t strip the hands of moisture or healthy bacteria. They should also contain added, skin-loving ingredients like glycerin, plant oils, and hyaluronic acid. Fragrance is optional depending on your skin’s sensitivities.

The principal chemical agent responsible for cleaning soaps is a surfactant. This chemical agent eases the process of solution oil in the water, so the oil and dirt on the skin can easily wash out using water. In addition to oil and dirt, toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances with long-term harm to the skin are also removed. The main reason for producing lathers while using soaps is surfactants too. However, surfactants are not the only ingredient of soaps. There are different types of these products that consist of moisturizing agents, oil control constituents, Essenes, and fragrances specifically designed for different skin types.

Watch Out For Ingredients That Can Trigger Allergies Or That Are Drying

In addition to red flags like fragrance, people should be mindful that a cleanser may contain an ingredient that triggers a skin allergy. If someone notices that a product worsens the eczema, then it may be worthwhile to see a dermatologist to assess whether further testing for allergies to certain ingredients might make sense, Ungar says.

According to the National Eczema Association, the following ingredients may be irritating to people with eczema:

Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

For example, some soaps contain the ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate . This is a surfactant a compound in many cleansing detergents that degreases and washes dirt away.

This ingredient is also in certain body washes, shampoos, and facial cleansers.

Its an effective cleanser, and some people can use it on their body and face with no adverse side effects. But since surfactants can have a drying effect on the skin, soaps containing SLS can cause further drying in people with already dry skin, explains Nikola Djordjevic, MD, a doctor and co-founder of MedAlertHelp.org.

Why Do Some Soaps Make Your Hands Dry

Soap is designed to bond with the dirt and germs that get stuck on your hands. However, if your soap is too harsh, then it will also strip the natural oils from your skin, making your hands flaky and dry. Hot water, rubbing your hands dry and a lack of moisturiser will also exacerbate the problem, as will washing your hands excessively which most of us are doing right now.

Antibacterial soap often gets a bad rap for its drying qualities because its infused with extra antimicrobial ingredients designed to fight bacteria. But its easy to find a nourishing antibacterial soap if you know which ingredients to look for.

What Should You Look For In A Soap For Sensitive Skin

There are a few elements to consider when looking for a soap that won’t irritate sensitive skin:

  • Fragrance-Free: While a floral scent can make your shower feel and smell like a spa, the artificial fragrances in many body cleansers can be triggers for sensitive skin. “Some soap manufacturers believe people want to be enveloped by nice smells when they wash, so they add high levels of perfume to their products,” says Dr. Nicole Hayre, aboard-certified dermatologist and founder of the Cosmetic Dermatology Center in Virginia. The problem with perfume is it can irritate sensitive skin and cause allergic reactions. One of the first recommendations I make to patients with sensitive skin is to use cleansers labeled ‘fragrance-free’ or ‘non-fragranced.'”
  • Look Out for Preservatives: In addition to fragrance, certain preservatives can be irritating for sensitive skin, too. Dr. Hayre calls out “methylchloroisothiazolinone” and “methylisothiazolinone” as two specific ones to look out for. She says the latter was named “contact allergen of the year” by dermatologists in 2013.
