Skincare For Acne Prone Skin

The Ordinary 100% Niacinamide Powder

A Nighttime Skincare Routine for Sensitive, Acne-Prone Skin | Skincare with @Susan Yara

The Ordinary 100% Niacinamide Powder is a newer offering from The Ordinary. It contains 100% niacinamide in powder form. It cant be used alone but must be mixed with an appropriate non-conflicting water-based treatment with a pH between 5.1 and 7.0.

I think its easiest to mix this niacinamide powder with another product from The Ordinary since The Ordinary discloses the pH of their products. The Ordinary provides a list of their products that will work as a base for the niacinamide powder:

Mix 1/4 scoop of niacinamide powder with the base product in the palm of your hand. How much of the base product? The Ordinary provides an example: 1/4 scoop of this niacinamide powder is approximately 0.05g niacinamide, and you mix it with four drops of the base, such as a serum.

The result yields a 10-15% concentration of niacinamide.

You may wonder whether its worth all the effort. In my experience, it is. The DIY serum cocktail makes a noticeable difference in the size of my pores and brightens my skin. It provides all of the oil regulation properties of niacinamide as well.

Additionally, The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% slightly irritates my skin, so I am thrilled that The Ordinary has another niacinamide option.

Do not use in the same routine as vitamin C products and exfoliating acids.

The Ordinary Exfoliating Acids

Skincare acids have gained in popularity in recent years, as they are an effective way to clear away dead skin cells and brighten the skin, even skin tone, and increase skin clarity. Oily and acne-prone skin types can benefit from acids since they clear away dead skin cells that clog pores, causing breakouts.

Please note that the use of alpha and beta-hydroxy acids below makes your skin more sensitive to sun exposure, so be sure to wear sunscreen while using these products and for seven days after.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution contains 7% glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid . This toning solution is a chemical exfoliator and will remove dead skin cells to clarify and brighten the skin. With continued use, it will also improve skin texture.

This product will reduce oil and dead skin buildup, which leads to clogged pores. Fewer clogged pores mean fewer breakouts and acne.

Formulated at a pH between 3.5-3.7, this glycolic acid toning solution contains Tasmanian pepperberry to reduce irritation associated with acid use. It also contains ginseng root and aloe vera to soothe the skin and improve skin radiance.

In this 2018 study published in the journal Molecules, glycolic acid has been shown to provide anti-inflammatory benefits to the skin. It also minimizes the appearance of pores.

Lets not forget about its anti-aging benefits. Glycolic acid helps reduce the appearance of the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Cosrx Ac Collection Blemish Spot Clearing Serum

COSRX AC Collection Blemish Spot Clearing Serum helps reduce all traces of acne, including acne scars, dark spots, and redness.

The serum uses COSRXs Centella AC-RX Complex filled with three ingredients that help to heal and soothe the skin.

These three actives: madecassic acid, asiaticoside, and asiatic acid, come from the Centella asiatica plant, which is highly anti-inflammatory and helps to speed up the healing process of the skin.

Its also high in antioxidants which help protect the skin from environmental damage.

The most concentrated ingredient in the serum is propolis extract. Propolis is a resin that bees make to protect their hives from bacteria and viruses. When applied to the skin, it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help to heal acne and reduce scarring.

A 4% niacinamide concentration brightens dull skin and reduces the look of hyperpigmentation caused by acne and breakouts. Hydrating and moisturizing ingredients include panthenol, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, sunflower seed oil, macadamia oil, and Ceramide NP.

The serum is extremely lightweight and hardly thicker than water in consistency, making it comfortable on the skin and easy to layer with other skincare products and makeup. See my complete review of this serum here.

Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream

COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream uses the power of snail secretion filtrate to nourish and moisturize the skin without oiliness.

The plumping cream contains 92% snail mucin to hydrate, soothe and repair damaged skin and strengthen the skin barrier.

Allantoin and panthenol calm and soothe the skin. Betaine helps to keep the skin hydrated. Arginine is an amino acid and a natural moisturizing factor and has wound-healing benefits.

The cream has a light, gel-like texture that is quickly absorbed into the skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated. Although it has a somewhat slimy texture, once applied to the skin, it does not feel sticky or greasy at all.

This Korean moisturizer is perfect for red and irritated skin due to acne and dehydrated or dry skin types dealing with dark spots and post-acne marks.

COSRX notes that no external force is used to extract the snail mucin, and no snails are harmed in the making of their products.

Sunscreen Is The Best Anti

A great majority of what people regard to be premature skin aging is actually just too much skin exposure. Wearing a sunscreen to prevent tanning is the most important thing that you can do for your skin. In addition to protecting yourself from skin cancer, using sunscreen will also diminish the look of wrinkles and other imperfections. Even in cloudy conditions, a daily sunscreen application should be at the top of your beauty to-do list.

Yes You Can Develop Acne

Theres a big misconception that acne is reserved exclusively for the teenage years. That couldnt be farther from the truth. In fact, 12 to 22 percent of adults deal with regular breakouts. You could live your entire adolescence without ever putting a spot treatment on a blemish, only to develop severe acne in your 20s, 30s, or 40s. Dr. Marchbein explains that this adult female acne is typically hormonal in nature. The main treatment is going to be controlling the hormones, she explains.

The two most common treatments to regulate hormones, and in turn oil production, is via birth control pills and a drug called Spironolactone. While the latter is not technically designed to treat acne, its widely accepted as a very, very safe treatment and has hundreds of studies to back up its efficacy as an acne treatment.

The Different Types Of Acne

ohlamour studio / Stocksy

Although acne is technically the name of the skin condition that can result in breakouts, pimples of all types have become synonymous with the term. While acne symptoms do all start out the same way, some may progress to form different types of breakouts. All acne lesions have the same starting point, the microcomedone, a microscopic blockage of the narrow duct extending around a fine hair follicle unit from the deeper dermis to the skin surface, says Kraffert. As the microcomedone persists, it can become a normal open comedone or a closed comedone which resembles a tiny whitehead at the skin surface. Inflamed comedones are sometimes raised with surrounding redness. Some microcomedones do not progress into typical comedones, but instead develop underlying inflammation. Depending on the degree of inflammation and its depth within the skin, these red and tender bumps are called papules and, when there are pus points centrally, pustules. Deeper painful papules are called cysts. Larger cysts are sometimes referred to as nodular cysts.

This Squalane Granactive Retinoid is water-free and contains 2% of advanced retinoid active complex.

Contrary to Ordinary retinol, Ordinary retinoids can cause low to no irritation on your skin.

Retinoids are not a direct acne treatment, instead, it is a very powerful anti-aging actor in your skincare.

In fact, if you have acne you may experience a temporary acne increase in the first few weeks.

However, when used before compatible acne treatments, it unclogs your skin pores and allows other treatments to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Note: DO not use this product in conjunction with other retinoids including retinol or retinoic acid
