What Are The Symptoms Of Allodynia

The BEST GEL CREAMS for oily, sensitive skin| Dr Dray

The main symptom of allodynia is pain from stimuli that dont usually cause pain.

In some cases, you might find hot or cold temperatures painful. You might find gentle pressure on your skin painful. You might feel pain in response to a brushing sensation or other movement along your skin or hair.

Depending on the underlying cause of your allodynia, you might experience other symptoms too.

For example, if its caused by fibromyalgia, you might also experience:

indicated that PIEZO2, a gene that controls the sense of touch, may contribute to tactile allodynia.

Easing The Pain Of Hyper

At the start of 2022, I caught COVID-19. While recovering in self-isolation, I woke one morning to find that all the skin on my upper body was ultra-sensitive to the touch. It was a sensitivity that caused sharp, painful pricks whenever something rested against it so that the sensation of wearing a shirt was that of a million little needles poking into my back, shoulders, and chest. I learned later that I had developed a syndrome, not unheard of with inflammatory viral diseases such as COVID-19, called cutaneous hyperesthesia . Lucky for me, the symptoms had reduced significantly by the following day and gradually subsided entirely as I recovered. In some cases, though, cutaneous hyperesthesia can be a chronic, limiting condition with an array of causes and cures.

Skin Too Sensitive For Its Own Good

During the start of the pandemic, the Department of Dermatology at Wroclaw Medical University in Poland started hearing reports of COVID-19 patients developing cases of cutaneous hyperesthesia. In a review of two such case studies, the department found that both patients who developed cutaneous hyperesthesia from COVID had their symptoms decline alongside the rest of their COVID manifestations. Their painful skin condition was alleviated with warm baths and anti-inflammatory medication primarily designed to provide temporary pain relief. However, for other causes of cutaneous hyperesthesia, some treatments may help more permanently quell the pain.

Solutions Available For Hypersensitive Skin

Hypersensitive skin doesn’t need to be a burden. With the right skin care routine it can be brought back into balance, sensitivity can be regulated and redness soothed.

For example, Eucerin uses an active ingredient SymSitive* in its Hypersensitive Skin ranges. SymSitive* effectively acts as a sensitivity regulator directly at the source of hyper-reactivity instantly relieving the unpleasant sensations. It also helps to increase the skin’s tolerance and give instant, long-lasting skin comfort. For facial redness Eucerin AntiREDNESS Soothing Care and Eucerin AntiREDNESS Concealing Day Cream Tinted SPF 25 contain Licochalcone A, a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

We like to always err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to taking care of our bodies. So if you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, and your condition lasts for longer than two weeks, you should definitely reach out to your primary care physician.

Also, if there is any bleeding, itching, or pain present, you should definitely get that checked out as soon as possible. If you are experiencing visible symptoms along with your skin sensitivity, you could also schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to hopefully get to the root of the problem.

Key Points Of Allodynia:

  • Allodynia is the experience of pain from a non-painful stimulation of the skin, such as light touch.
  • The type of migraine, the frequency and severity of attacks, and the number of years of the headache disorder relate to the presence and severity of allodynia
  • Migraine and related pain conditions with allodynia have in common the process of central sensitization, characterized by over excitability of pain nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord
  • Triptans are less effective in migraine attacks with allodynia
  • Allodynia means other pain. It is a pain that results from a stimulus that is not normally painful. Anyone who has ever had bad sunburn has an idea of how painful even light touch can be. When the skin is sensitized, in this example from the sun, wearing a shirt or taking a shower can be very painful. Up to 80% of persons with migraine experience at least one symptom of allodynia during a headache attack. They may describe pain to touch, such as with resting ones head on a pillow, or with wearing a hat, earrings, or necklace. These are examples of static tactile or mechanical allodynia.

An example of dynamic allodynia is pain from lightly brushing ones hair. Another is pain from shaving ones face. Yet another, thermal allodynia, refers to pain due to exposure to either warm or cold. Allodynia is not referred pain, although it can occur outside the area stimulated. It is also not hyperalgesia, which is a pain stimulus more painful than usual.

Sensitive Skin At Different Anatomic Sites

For many, the term sensitive skin is synonymous with sensitive facial skin. The face is highly innervated therefore, adverse sensations may be experienced more acutely. Facial skin comes into contact with a wider variety of products compared to some other anatomic sites, such as, cleansers, cosmetics, and shaving products. Since the face is typically uncovered, this site is also exposed to greater extremes in weather, climate changes, and other environmental insults. Further, individuals may be more aware of appearance and visual signs of irritation on the face and, therefore, likely to perceive their facial skin as more sensitive.

Table 3. Prevalence of self-declared sensitive skin at specific anatomic locations.

The face has demonstrated to be the most common site of skin sensitivity , predictable physiologically due to the larger and multiple number of products used on the face , a thinner barrier in facial skin, and a greater density of nerve endings . The nasolabial fold was reported to be the most sensitive region of the facial area, followed by the malar eminence, chin, forehead, and upper lip . Saint-Martory found hand, scalp, feet, neck, torso, and back sensitivity followed facial sensitivity in descending order of prevalence . Significant numbers of individuals experience sensitivity of the scalp .

What Are Some Tips For Protecting My Sensitive Skin In Winter And Summer

First, wear a sunscreen year-round. Use one that says broad spectrum with a sun protection factor of at least 30, and use it every day that you will be in the sun for longer than 20 minutes.

Remember, the sunâs skin-damaging UVB rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Avoid going out in the sun during these hours whenever possible, any time of the year.

In winter, to help prevent skin dryness, flaking, itching, and cracking do the following:

    • Donât overheat your home.
    • Take warm, not hot, baths and showers — and fewer of them — and use a soap-free cleanser.
    • Minimize skin dryness after bathing: Pat your skin dry and apply moisturizer while your skin is still moist.
    • Use a moisturizer containing petrolatum, mineral oil, linoleic acid, ceramides, dimethicone, or glycerin.

In summer, keep in mind that tanning damages your skin. Donât lie out in the sun, even if youâve applied sunscreen. See guidelines for choosing a sunscreen below.

If you do go out, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and tight-woven clothing that covers your arms and legs. Apply your sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out, and reapply it every 80 minutes, after swimming, or if youâve been perspiring heavily.
