Bacterial Meningitis And Petechiae

Meningitis is the infection of the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

One symptom of meningococcal meningitis is a headache accompanied by a petechial rash, known as the meningitis rash. Although the rash is common, it doesnt always occur, so if you have other symptoms of meningitislike a stiff neck and headachebe sure to seek medical care immediately.

The meningitis rash is a petechial rash. At first, you might notice petechiae on the arms or other areas of the body. These may be blanching if you try the clear glass test mentioned above, but as the rash becomes more pronounced it will become non-blanching. The meningitis rash can progress from petechial to a purpuric rash, which looks more like bruising than pinpricks.

Petechial rashes can be hard to spot on people with darker skin tones. Look for the rash on lighter areas like the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands. It can also appear on the roof of the mouth or the inside of the eyelids.

Meningitis is a serious disease that progresses quickly. If you have a petechial rash, especially if it is paired with other meningitis symptoms like headache or stiff neck, seek immediate medical attention.

When Should You See A Doctor

If home remedies do not work and you want to get rid of the red spots quickly, visit a dermatologist and opt for professional skin treatments like an AHA or BHA chemical peel.

You may have to visit a dermatologist if the red marks have been on your skin since birth . These are a result of genetic factors. In such cases, it is very difficult to fade or lighten these red spots naturally. Cosmetic procedures are the only way to remove these spots.

The use of medicines, ointments, skin creams like calamine, laser treatments, surgical options, and other medical and clinical alternatives are helpful in treating, lightening, and removing these unwanted red spots from the body.

Also, if the red spots on the skin are accompanied by fever, fatigue, swelling, breathing trouble, pain, or pus, it is best to seek medical attention at the earliest.

How Is Bacterial Endocarditis Treated

Endocarditis can be life-limiting. Once you get it, youll needquick treatmentto prevent damage to your heart valves and more serious complications.

After taking your blood cultures, your healthcare provider will start you on intravenous antibiotic therapy. Theyll use a broad-spectrum antibiotic to cover as many suspected bacterial species as possible. As soon as they know which specific type of organism you have, theyll adjust your antibiotics to target it. Usually, youll receive IV antibiotics for as long as six weeks to cure your infection.

Your provider will monitor your symptoms throughout your therapy to see if your treatment is effective. Theyll also repeat your blood cultures.

If endocarditis damages your heart valve and any other part of your heart, you may need surgery to fix your heart valve and improve your heart function.

After you complete your treatment, your provider will determine the sources of bacteria in your blood and treat them. In the future, you should take prophylactic antibiotics according to national guidelines.

What Can Get Rid Of Perioral Dermatitis

You may be able to get rid of this rash on your own. To clear perioral dermatitis, you must stop applying all corticosteroids, including hydrocortisone cream, to your skin.

This means that if youre applying a:

  • Hydrocortisone cream without your doctors knowledge, stop using it

  • Prescription corticosteroid, ask the doctor who prescribed it if you can stop applying it

If your doctor tells you to keep using a corticosteroid, ask if you can use another medication.

When you stop applying a corticosteroid or hydrocortisone cream, the rash can worsen. If this happens, it can be tempting to start using the cream or ointment again. Dont. Using it again will only bring temporary relief. Each time you stop applying it, the rash can flare.

Its also possible that if you continue to apply the corticosteroid medication, it will eventually cause the rash to worsen each time you apply it.

Continue to apply prescription medication

Before you stop applying a prescription medicine, check with the doctor who prescribed it.
