How This $6 Cleanser Stacked Up To A More Expensive Fan
I’ve tested hundreds of beauty products thanks to my job writing about them, and Charlotte Tilbury’s brand ranks high on my list. The brand’s Pillow Talk lipstick is universally flattering and can always be found in my handbag. The brand somewhat recently released a charcoal-based cleanser, and I knew I had to put it to the test against the version from Bioré.
At first glance, Bioré and Charlotte Tilbury’s version appeared virtually the same both claim to draw out impurities from clogged pores. They even have the same color, texture, and easy application. But when I put them to the test, it became clear that in this case, expensive didn’t mean better.
Tilbury’s cleanser, unfortunately, did more harm than good. The formula felt heavy on my skin, and when mixed with water, the consistency turned oil-like and made my pores feel clogged which was confirmed when I began breaking out after a few uses.
Considering that the Charlotte Tilbury cleanser is more than triple the price, it seems obvious to me that Bioré’s cleanser provides a better value.
Do Pore Strips Really Remove Blackheads
When pulling the nose strip off, it often only removes the tops of nose blackheads, along with healthy skin cells. Eliminating the debris within pores can also make them appear larger because theyre more exposed, instead of refining or minimizing them like exfoliators and cleansers do. Even if you remove nose blackheads and unclog pores on the nose with pore strips, they will likely become clogged again soon after. Pore strips may even make the area oilier if dried out skin overcompensates by boosting its oil production.

Pore Strips Do Not Stop Blackheads From Forming
Have you ever squeezed a blackhead? Then you know how long that plug of gunk is.
Pore strips pull off the top, most visible part of the blackhead. While the tops of blackheads fill your pore strip, the rest of the blemish stays behind in the pore.
Although blackheads look fairly solid, they actually have more of a toothpaste-like consistency. So the pore strips can’t really grab hold entirely of something semi-solid.
It’s like putting a piece of duct tape across the open tube of your toothpaste and ripping it off. Sure, there will be some toothpaste on the tape, but the majority will stay firmly encompassed in the tube. So will the blackhead in your pore.
Pore strips can’t completely remove larger, deeper blackheads. And, unfortunately, they won’t stop your blackheads from forming.
And here’s a cool factoid for youdid you know not all black dots on your nose are actually blackheads? They look like tiny blackheads, but it’s actually large or prominent pores. Pore strips won’t help this at all.
No matter how often you use pore strips, they’re never going to get rid of your blackheads completely. For that, you will need a different treatment.

With over 500 five-star reviews on Sephora, you can wave buh-bye to blackheads with these hydrocolloid-packed strips. They not only absorb sebum, oil, and dead skin trapped in your pores, but vitamin A helps to minimize the appearance of large pores. Keep in mind that these are not exactly a quick fix, as the directions advise you to wear them for at least six hours or overnight for them to really work their magic.
They Won’t Reduce Pore Size Or Prevent You From Developing Blackheads Either So They Aren’t Beneficial In The Long Term
If you’re using pore strips to remove blackheads, the benefit will be very short-term. “Within 24 to 48 hours, all that junk that you removed with the pore strip will reaccumulate and your skin cells are constantly turning over, so the dead cells get trapped inside the pores,” Nagler says. In other words, pore strips won’t make blackheads totally disappear, so they will keep coming back.
“Some people also think that pore strips can be used to reduce pore size, but that isn’t possible even if your pores look less noticeable after using pore strips, they haven’t changed in size,” she says.

You’ll Need To Use Other Products Like Chemical Peels Or Retinoids To Really Clean Your Pores And Prevent Nose Blackheads And Breakouts In The Future
“I recommend products such as chemical peels, retinols, and retinoids to really clean the pores and prevent blackheads and breakouts in the long term,” Nagler says. Most of these come as creams or serums, and can either be purchased over the counter or obtained with a prescription from a dermatologist.
These products can either be used on their own or in conjunction with pore strips to improve results. And what about pore size? “We usually do some gentle laser treatments to reduce pore size,” she says.
If you aren’t into chemicals, there are other options like oil cleansing that can be used to clean nose pores. But a dermatologist is still your best resource when it comes to deciding what’s right for you and your skin.

Do They Really Damage Your Skin
Unfortunately, theres not a lot of research on the efficacy of nose strips. Thats why you might see a lot of conflicting information about whether theyre good or bad.
Generally, those who claim that nose strips are bad say the strips can remove more than just the blackhead, clearing pores entirely of sebaceous filaments.
These sebaceous filaments line pores and maintain healthy oil balance in the skin, so theyre not entirely bad.
When they get removed, your pores could become exposed to irritating dirt and oils.
An older study found that strips effectively remove blackheads.
However, these effects were only temporary. The blackheads likely refill within a few weeks.
The removal process also requires proper application. To make sure the strips remove blackheads, the adhesive has to be activated with water.
For the best results, its best to follow the directions on the products label.

Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use Pore Strips For Blackheads
We all do it. Once we see the black speckled dots appear on our noses, we bring the nose strips out. I admit it. Its satisfying to rip that nose strip off and gawk at all that grime, but heres the problem- the blackheads come back again!
Besides just sweeping the problem under the rug, here are 5 top reasons why you should reconsider using a pore strip:
1. Pore strips contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients that may irritate the skin.
A quick look at the ingredients from one of the more popular Biore strips lists:
POLYQUATERNIUM-37, SILICA, WATER, GLYCERIN, POLYSILICONE-13, PEG-12 DIMETHICONE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE,HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA EXTRACT, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, STEARYL GLYCYRRHETINATE, METHYLPARABEN.
The first ingredient, Polyquaternium-37, is a hairspray-like substance, which sticks to your pores to remove the buildup. But it also stretches the pore, which leads to even greater buildup and bigger blackheads!
Commercial pore strips also usually contain parabens, and thats an absolute NO since it can be absorbed through your skin.
2. Pore strips can damage more sensitive, thin skin and even pull out both skin and hair.
Thats why theres a warning within the instructions to only use nose strips about once a week. Overusing nose strips can make your skin actually look worse. Pore strips can be abrasive, causing skin irritation and turning red.
3. Theyre only a temporary fix because they dont prevent blackheads.
5. Its not an eco-friendly solution.
Increased Pore Size: False
If youve done a little internet hunting, you might have noticed pore strips getting a bad rap for actually causing pore size to increase. However, according to Dr. Tanzi, there simply isnt any proof that pore strips can make your pores larger. Pore size gets worse with age and sun exposure or conditions like rosacea, which run in families, she explains, the size of pores is based on genetics, too.
So if youre noticing your pores looking a bit larger than normal, its likely not your strip thats to blame but rather genetics or other skin conditions. In fact, Dr. Tanzi explains that pores will get larger over time regardless of whether they are treated or not, so knowing your skins tendencies is key to understanding how to best treat and refine your pores.

What Makes Pore Strips Bad For Skin
The adhesive on blackhead strips largely contributes to the irritation and damage associated with these treatments. The sticky coating that attaches to the debris within pores leaves the complexion looking flaky, red and inflamed. Pore strips can also cause spider veins and broken capillaries around the nose. Whats more, if you use a blackhead strip over a damaged pore, it could tear the skin, resulting in unsightly pore or acne scars.
Tonymoly Strawberry Nose Pack
To thoroughly treat blackheads, this product contains three strips that together leave pores clean and smooth. The first strip dissolves sebum to open up pores, prepping skin for the second strip, which removes blackheads and dead skin. The third pore strip cleans and soothes skin while tightening pores, utilizing ingredients like sage, peppermint oil and tea tree oil.

Remember when pore strips first surfaced? Happy teens graced television ads, peeling away a paper-like strip from their noses and marveling with delight at all the gunk that came out. For me, Ive never truly experienced the happy-teen-in-a-pore-strip-commercial sensation: Usually, when I peel them away, my eyes water, I pause in between small tears to take a breather, re-evaluate my life decisions, and curse the skin gods for burdening me with clogged pores, all to finally unveil just a few clogs leftover on the strip.A quick Google search will have you believe that pore strips are extremely effective, so maybe Ive just always done it wrong? However, a poll in the office made us all question whether these painful strips are even safe in the first place.

King called Biores pore strips classic and noted that if used routinely, they may reduce the overall appearance of pores. Instead of adhesive, Biores strips rely on water-activated cationic bonds, a so-called magnet for blackheads, according to the brand. The strips are available for the nose, face and chin. Biore also sells strips infused with Blue Agave and Witch Hazel.

What Should You Use Instead Of Pore Strips
Experts agree that a pore strip can clean the surface of your skin, albeit, temporarily. But for long-term cleansing, exfoliating products are your best bet. Non-abrasive products will effectively solve the problem and keep blackheads at bay.
What works? The short answer is products with salicylic acid, washing your face regularly and thoroughly, and using spot treatments.
For instance, take a look at these products:
Peppermint Exfoliating Cleanser We just love the mild and energizing peppermint scent it leaves on your skin. This gentle exfoliating cleanser provides that deep clean by sloughing off dead skin and removing dirt, excess oil, makeup and other skin debris. Gentle enough to use for your morning and evening skin care routine.

This 20-minute Rescue Mask combines the effective properties of zinc and sulfur to repair the skins natural barrier. It helps to unclog pores, as well as remove excess oil. . Exfoliating Toner This easy to use exfoliating toner contains salicylic acid. It does the job when it comes to grime without over drying. Best of all, this exfoliating toner tightens skin texture and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Why You Should Not Use Pore Strips As A Primary Blackhead Treatment
If you’ve only got a few blackheads here and there, an occasional pore strip will probably work just fine for you.
But if blackheads are a particularly stubborn problem, or you have more than just the occasional breakout, you’re going to need something more powerful than a pore strip.
First, try an over-the-counter acne treatment. The most effective ones will contain salicylic acid.
You might even decide to make an appointment at your local salon or skin spa. An esthetician can manually clean out blackheads and pore blockages, creating an immediate improvement of the skin. Like pore strips, extractions don’t keep blackheads from forming but can be a good jump-start to blackhead treatment.
If you have a lot of blackheads, and you can’t get improvement with OTC acne products, it’s time for prescription medication. Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical retinoid to help get those blackheads under control.
