“E” stands for two different features of melanoma:

• Elevation: Moles are often elevated above the skin, often unevenly so with some parts raised and others flat.
• Evolving: A mole that is evolving is also concerning and, in retrospect, many people with melanomas note that a mole had been changing in terms of size, shape, color, or general appearance before they were diagnosed.

When a melanoma develops in an existing mole, the texture may change and become hard, lumpy, or scaly. Although the skin may feel different and itch, ooze, or bleed, a melanoma does not usually cause pain.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Melanoma

About half of all melanomas start with a new, abnormal-looking mole in normal-looking skin. This usually looks like a dark area or a new mole that changes over weeks or months. Other melanomas develop from a mole that you already have.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between melanoma and a normal mole. The following checklist explains what to look for. It is called the ABCDE list.

Most melanomas are likely to be uneven or irregular in shape . Ordinary moles are usually more even and both halves look mostly the same .

It Can Also Be Caused By Other Cancers If They Have Spread

While lung cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are the most common causes for SVCS, other cancer types can cause the syndrome if they have spread to the mediastinum. This is “the space in the chest between the lungs, breastbone and spine. It includes the heart, blood vessels, thymus, trachea, esophagus and lymph nodes,” explains the Canadian Cancer Society .

Breast cancer, germ cell tumors, esophageal cancer thymoma , mesothelioma, melanoma, thyroid cancer, leukemia, and Kaposi sarcoma are all types of cancer that can spread to the mediastinum.

When To See A Healthcare Provider

What Will Happen After Treatment

Youll be glad when treatment is over. For years after treatment, you will see your cancer doctor. Be sure to go to all of these follow-up visits. You will have exams, blood tests, and maybe other tests to see if the cancer has come back.

At first, your visits may be every few months. Then, the longer youre cancer-free, the less often the visits are needed. After 5 years, they may be done once a year.

Tips For Screening Moles For Cancer

Examine your skin on a regular basis. A common location for melanoma in men is on the back, and in women, the lower leg. But check your entire body for moles or suspicious spots once a month. Start at your head and work your way down. Check the hidden areas: between fingers and toes, the groin, soles of the feet, the backs of the knees. Check your scalp and neck for moles. Use a handheld mirror or ask a family member to help you look at these areas. Be especially suspicious of a new mole. Take a photo of moles and date it to help you monitor them for change. Pay special attention to moles if youre a teen, pregnant, or going through menopause, times when your hormones may be surging.

Identify An Ugly Duckling

Just because a mole is, well, ugly, doesnt mean its cancerous. However, most normal moles on the body look alike. Any mole that sticks out among the others on your body in any way, is an Ugly Duckling and should be examined further, says Dr. McNeill. Perhaps the offender is bigger than the rest. Maybe its darker than your other moles. Or perhaps its the sole raised mark. No matter what, if its different, have a dermatologist check it out.

What Does A Normal Vs An Abnormal Mole Look Like

Normal moles are usually round or oval and smaller than a pencil eraser. They are one consistent color , with a clear border. Most people have less than 50 moles. You can be born with moles, develop them with age or even have some disappear.

Cancerous, or malignant, moles may vary greatly in appearance. To help identify moles that might indicate melanoma, think of the letters A-B-C-D-E:

• A | Asymmetry: Mole is an irregular shape, such as if one side looks different than the other
• B | Border: Mole has irregular, ragged, notched or scalloped borders
• C | Color: Mole has more than one color or uneven shading
• D | Diameter: Mole is bigger than a pencil eraser
• E | Evolution: Mole changes in some way

Basal Cell Carcinoma Warning Signs

Basal cell carcinoma typically develops on parts of your body exposed to sunlight, but it does occasionally occur in other places. often include:

• an open sore that doesnt heal or heals and returns it may ooze or crust over
• a pink growth with raised edges and a depressed center, sometimes with abnormal blood vessels that resemble the spokes of a wheel
• a small pink or red bump thats shiny, pearly, or translucent it may have areas that are black, blue, or brown
• a raised red patch that itches
• a flat and firm area that resemble a pale or yellow scar

What Happens If They Find Melanoma In The Lymph Nodes

If the results of ultrasound scan, FNA or SNB are positive for melanoma, you may need further surgery to remove all the lymph nodes in the area. If no cancer cells are found, the melanoma is unlikely to have spread to other areas .

When melanoma has spread to your lymph nodes, the node usually forms a firm to hard lump. If this occurs between planned follow-up visits, you should let your doctor know immediately.

Causes Of Skin Cancer

Different forms of skin cancer develop when there are mutations in the DNA of skin cells. Skin cancer begins with a mutation in the epidermis, which is the top layer of the skin. Cells begin to multiply and grow out of control, eventually forming a cancerous mass.

While various risk factors have been identified, it is not always apparent what factor actually causes skin cell DNA to mutate.

One cause of skin cancer that is clear is exposure to sunlight . The ultraviolet rays in sunlight and tanning beds can cause extensive damage to the DNA in skin cells. In turn, these damaged cells may someday become cancerous. Harmful UV radiation can occur relatively soon before the appearance of skin cancer, but it can also pre-date a cancer diagnosis by many years.

However, UV radiation cant explain skin cancers that occur on body parts that arent exposed to the sun. This suggests that different causes exist for certain cases of skin cancer. Among these causes, for instance, may be a drastic or repeated exposure to toxic substances.

Should I See My Doctor

Go and see your GP if:

• you have any of the ABCDE signs
• a mole is itching or painful
• a mole is bleeding or becoming crusty
• a mole looks inflamed
• you have an unusual mark or lump on your skin that lasts for a few weeks
• you have a dark area or line under a nail that is not due to an injury

The earlier a melanoma is picked up, the easier it is to treat and the more likely treatment is to be successful. So go to your GP as soon as possible.

How Does The Doctor Know I Have Melanoma

A new spot on your skin or a spot thats changing in size, shape, or color may be a warning sign of melanoma. If you have any of these changes, have your skin checked by a doctor.

The doctor will ask you questions about when the spot on your skin first showed up and if it has changed in size or the way it looks. The rest of your skin will be checked. During the exam your doctor will check the size, shape, color and texture of any skin changes. If signs are pointing to melanoma, more tests will be done.
