The UV Index is a useful tool when it comes to protecting yourself from the sun. It tells you the strength of the suns daily UV rays the higher the number, the stronger the suns rays and the more important it is to protect yourself. Be sure to look up the UV Index on your favourite weather app or on the local weather or news channel. On days when the UV Index reaches 3 or more, you need to be extra careful to protect your skin. This time of year, the suns rays are usually at their strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Solar Ultraviolet Index
In the UK, the Met Office provides information called the Solar UV Index with their weather forecasts. The index is given as a figure in a triangle over the maps they use when giving forecasts. Cover Up With Long Sleeves A Hat And Sunglasses
Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants or a long skirt when you spend time outdoors. Clothes made from tightly woven fabrics are best for blocking UV rays.
Wear a hat with a wide brim that protects your face and neck. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. If you wear a baseball cap or visor, be sure to protect your ears and the back of your neck with sunscreen.
Its also important to wear sunglasses that block UV light. This will help protect your eyes and the skin around them from sun damage. Wrap-around sunglasses are best because they block UV rays from the side and the front.

Dont Use Tanning Beds
Its widely known that tanning beds are linked to skin cancers, including melanoma the deadliest type of skin cancer.
People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. And its not just your skin thats at risk: Exposure to the UV radiation that tanning beds emit also can cause cataracts and cancers of your eyes. Snyder says even occasional sunbed use almost triples your chances of developing melanoma. Young people including teenagers are especially sensitive to the UV rays that tanning beds emit.
If you really prefer the healthy glow of tanned skin, there are many sunless tanners and bronzers available that create that sun-kissed look without the risk of skin cancer. These are cosmetics applied to the skin like a cream or spray and can provide a temporary, artificial tan. The only color additive currently approved by FDA for this purpose is dihydroxyacetone .
If you do use a sunless tanner, be sure to still apply sunscreen when going out in the sun as most sunless tanning products dont contain sunscreen, she says.
How To Prevent Melanoma
Certainly at least half of cases of melanoma are caused by too much sun, or by being sunburnt earlier in life. So the advice, above, of avoiding too much sun, is all relevant. But many cases of melanoma occur on places which don’t get much sun and also occur in young people who haven’t ever had much sun exposure.

What Is Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is caused by the development and multiplication of abnormal cells within the skin. Excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun can damage DNA in the skin cells, producing mutations and genetic defects that can lead to cancer. Skin cancer initially manifests as precancerous lesions or dysplasia. Dysplastic changes include actinic keratosis, which presents as red or brown scaly areas on the skin, and as moles that can be either raised or flat, oval or round, and in various shades.
Healthy moles usually measure no more than 1/4 inch in diameter. Interestingly, most people have between 10-30 moles on their bodies. Dysplastic nevi, are abnormal moles, that have the potential to become cancer. Its possible to have up to 100 of these abnormal moles, which are distinguished by irregular shapes and borders, a larger diameter than normal moles, and a rough surface. They can be brown, red, tan, or pink in color.
Risk factors for skin cancer include having a family member that has had the disease, having red hair and skin that burns easily, and having numerous moles, or moles that are atypical.

The how-toâs havenât changed much in recent years â avoid too much ultraviolet light via sun or tanning beds and take care not to burn or tan â but that message is clearly not reaching enough people, said Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center cancer prevention researcher Dr. Margaret Madeleine.
A recent study by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly 5 million U.S. adults are treated every year for all types of skin cancer to the tune of $8.1 billion. Melanoma rates have doubled in this country since 1982, according to a CDC report earlier this month. The majority of these cancer cases are preventable.
Last summer, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a to prevent this too-common disease: Non-melanoma skin cancers, chiefly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are the most common cancers in this country by far, afflicting an estimated 4.3 million people per year.
That report, the first time the surgeon general had come out against sunbathing and tanning beds, is a great step, Madeleine said. But we need to do more.
âThe message needs to be louder,â Madeleine said. âThere are some really serious public health tactics that could be used.â

Protect Children From The Sun
Children need special attention, since they tend to spend more time outdoors and can burn more easily. Parents and other caregivers should protect children from excess sun exposure by using the steps above. Children need to be taught about the dangers of too much sun exposure as they become more independent.
Use Sunscreen With Spf 15 Or Higher
Use sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection, also called broad spectrum sunscreen. Check the expiration date on the bottle to make sure its not out of date.
To get the most protection:
- Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days UV rays can still harm your skin when it’s cloudy outside
- Put sunscreen on 30 minutes before you go outside and put on more sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat
- Be sure to use enough sunscreen youll need about a handful to cover your body
- Remember to apply sunscreen to your ears, hands, feet, the back of your neck, and any part of your scalp that isnt covered by hair
- Use lip balm with sunscreen in it to protect your lips
- If you wear very lightweight or loosely woven clothing , put sunscreen on under your clothes

Skin Cancer Prevention And Covid
Dermatologists and professionals in the skin cancer prevention field are concerned that the COVID-19 pandemic may impact skin cancer prevention efforts. Callahan, who serves on the National Council for Skin Cancer Prevention, has met with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and CDC where there’s a worry that sun protection might not be a top priority for people during the pandemic, especially as people look to outdoor activities to get out of the house and social distance.
Experts are also concerned that people may delay or cancel dermatologist appointments.
If someone has a spot of concern, now is not the time to wait, says Callahan. It could be a matter of life or death.
