Its happened to the best of us: You see a zit or some dull skin, so you use a salicylic acid toner. And then a lactic acid serum. And then maybe a swipe of a peel pad. And then a spot treatment. And then you wake up with red, raw, burning skin and a lifetime of regrets. Acids break down and dissolve the skin cells in your skin barrier, which is good, until you use too much and literally burn off and erode the top layer of your skin, says Mona Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine.
Layer On A Gentle Cream
Now its time to layer on a veryplain moisturizer nothing with fragrance or strong active ingredients like retinol orhydroquinone.On a good day those ingredients can be intense,so its best to avoid them so you dont further irritate or inflame your skin. Just avoid applying it on your pimple patches as the moisture can cause them to slide off.
At this point I will also use a glycolic acid-based serum on any older spots to help even out my skin. Dont apply it on your new wounds, though: will help fade dark spots once the picked spot is healed, but shouldnt be used on open skin, says Rabach. Thats because it can cause further irritation to sensitive, raw skin, she explains.

Although you can take steps to reduce the risk of facial scabs, its not possible to completely prevent them. Most of us develop pimples from time to time, and theres always the risk of getting bitten by an insect, developing a cold sore, or getting accidentally scratched.

If your wound bleeds put pressure on it. You can do this by holding a clean gauze pad on the wound.
Then, press the pad down gently. Check the wound every 30 seconds to see if the blood stopped flowing. Continuously put pressure on the skin picking wound until the bleeding stops.

Precautions: Dos & Donts
- The first step in controlling excoriation disorder is to keep an eye out for the triggers.
- Try and zero in on the times during which you notice yourself picking your skin – it could be during some mundane daily activity, while doing a stressful activity or even while watching TV.
- One highly recommended method to prevent skin picking is stimulus control – making a hostile environment for skin picking. If you use your fingers to pick your skin, trim your nails so you dont cause too much scarring. Consider wearing gloves to fight the urge to pick your skin.

More Filler Is Not Always The Best Option
While fillers may be a great option for some people, they may not be the best for others. More importantly, fillers will not stop the body from aging.
Putting too much filler in the face to try and make up for the aging process, which tends to happen, starts to make people not look like themselves anymore, Jacono said. I see patients who have been doing fillers for five to 10 years and theyre coming to me for a solution, because theyve already done all the injectables and lots of lasers, and now theyve spent tens of thousands of dollars and the effects of the treatments arent working for them anymore.
As Yagoda said, Filler is not the answer to everything.
As you continue to age and depending on your genetics, you may be predisposed to loose skin and areas where theres a lot of hanging. And it is not true, even though its a perpetuated myth that filler in the cheek can lift skin at the lower part of the face. Its just not possible.
If someone is trying to reverse the effects of too much filler, there are treatments available, both surgical and nonsurgical. For example, there is an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase, which can dissolve hyaluronic fillers like Restylane or Juvederm. There are also minimally invasive treatments like ThermiTight and Ultherapy that work to tighten the skin.
But sometimes, as Yagoda noted, surgery is the right way to go.
Treatments For Skin Picking Disorder
1. There is research that shows treatments for skin picking disorder include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy .
2. The therapies usually involve identifying the triggering factors and shooting various methods to destress and divert your mind from picking. This can include anything from using a stress ball to solving a puzzle or covering the affected area to prevent picking.
3. According to the International OCD Foundation, medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and certain anti-seizure drugs may also be helpful in treating skin picking disorder or excoriation.
4. According to The Trichotillomania Learning Center for body-focussed repetitive behaviours, although many studies have proven that symptoms of skin picking disorder reduced among patients who were prescribed certain medications, the results are not conclusive.
5. You can consider using a topical steroid or an antihistamine cream to reduce itching or a tingling sensation in the spots where you have picked the skin.
6. Studies suggest that glutamatergic agents and a glucose isomer Inositol can also help in reducing the symptoms of this disorder.
7. However, it is important to first understand whether it is indeed excoriation disorder before turning to a treatment method. Skin picking can be a sign of some other disorders such as substance abuse disorder and certain developmental disorders. Consult your doctor for the right diagnosis.

Stick To A Minimal Routine
Keeping my routine minimal is critical. It keeps me from cycling through product after product, spending mass amounts of cash on lotions and treatments and masks that probably wont help at all. I quite literally bought into the idea that good skin care had to be expensive, but my daily routine is cheaper than ever and my skin is healthier than ever Talk to a dermatologist about your skin type and the ingredients that will be most beneficial for you. Be open about your budget and ask about drugstore alternatives and in-office samples.
Ms. Rouleau recommends a routine with just four steps, all of which can be customized to your specific skin needs and budget:
An alcohol-free cleanser to remove dirt and makeup .
A hydrating toner that balances the skins pH and supports your skins barrier, or its outermost layer.
A treatment serum, which is thinner than moisturizer and offers ingredients for specific skin issues .
A moisturizer, which hydrates and again protects the skins barrier. Ms. Rouleau recommended a moisturizer that doubles as sunscreen.
Notice that harsh spot treatments are left out. Patients often use drying or irritating spot treatments out of desperation, Dr. Rhee said. This further complicates the problem by leading to skin thats more susceptible to irritation and physical inflammation, which perpetuates the cycle.
Immediately Stop Using Whatever Was Over
Pretty obvious, right? Throw away that Clarisonic brush, that popular scrub, that AHA peel with a cult following or whichever devilish invention youve been using on your poor skin. It doesnt like it. Period. Your skin is pretty low maintenance and is crying for you to stop smothering it with all that attention. Just stop. Seriously.

Remove your bandage when it gets wet or dirty. If your bandage did not get dirty or wet, you still must change your bandage at least once a day.

Will Slugging Make You Break Out
First, some good news: petrolatum is noncomedogenic, meaning it wont clog pores and cause breakouts. But theres a caveat. Depending on your skin type, it may still contribute to acne.
Even though its not comedogenic, as an occlusive, it can trap oils or other comedogenic ingredients in the skin and could potentially contribute to breakouts, said Hadley King, board-certified dermatologist in New York City and a clinical instructor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine.
This means that slugging is best for those with normal to dry skin types, or those experiencing irritation and eczema. King advises that those with combination or acne-prone skin skip it, but others may find it beneficial.
For dry skin, particularly in a dry environment that will exacerbate transepidermal water loss and dryness of the skin, applying an occlusive like petrolatum can be very helpful, King said.
Yadav likes to think of slugging as a factory reset for skin, giving skin the opportunity to heal itself. Think about how you help heal a wound on your skin, like a cut: You slather it in a product like Neosporin , then cover it to keep it protected. Slugging works similarly keeping the skin moist, then protecting that moisture with an occlusive formula, Yadav said.

Overuse Of Fillers Can Have Serious Repercussions
Over extended periods of time, fillers can actually stretch out the tissues under the skin, essentially accelerating the aging process because those tissues arent going to bounce back the same way as you get older, Park Avenue facial plastic surgeon Andrew Jacono explained to HuffPost.
New York-based cosmetic facial plastic surgeon Michelle Yagoda told HuffPost that once the filler is gone , it leaves behind an enlarged space that requires more filler over time to stay inflated.
Each time you put more filler in, the pocket expands more and it becomes a bigger pocket, so it needs more and more filler to keep it expanded, Yagoda explained.
When it comes to lips, if you dont add more filler to inflate the space, you can be left with droopy, wrinkly or even misshapen lips that may require surgery to correct, Yagoda noted.
After the skin has been stretched out, its like a tummy tuck when a womans had a baby and her skin hangs, Jacono said. When you of that big lip, its like giving birth. You dissolve away the filler and theres all this extra skin and I have to cut it away. Its a pretty big procedure and takes about two weeks to recover.
Fillers can also migrate once theyve been injected, and you could end up with a top lip that looks like what Yagoda described as two saggy boobs, in which the sides of the lips hang down.
