How Is Elliptical Excision Performed

Elliptical excision is the most common way to excise a tumor.1 Your dermatologist will draw the margin around the tumor. For a low-risk non-melanoma skin cancer, the margin may be as narrow as 4 millimeters . For a thick melanoma, the margin may be as wide as 2 centimeters .2,3 If you had an excisional biopsy, your doctor will mark the margins from the biopsy scar.1

Your dermatologist will cut an elliptical shape around the margin. An elliptical cut removes more skin than a circle would but results in a better-looking scar.4 Your doctor will close the incision with stitches. The scar will look like a thin, flat line.4

For Adults: 5 Ways to Treat a Sunburn

1. Act Fast to Cool It Down

If youre near a cold pool, lake or ocean, take a quick dip to cool your skin, but only for a few seconds so you dont prolong your exposure. Then cover up and get out of the sun immediately. Continue to cool the burn with cold compresses. You can use ice to make ice water for a cold compress, but dont apply ice directly to the sunburn. You can continue with the NSAIDs as directed on the label until the burn feels better. You can also use an over-the-counter 1 percent cortisone cream as directed for a few days to help calm redness and swelling. Aloe vera may also soothe mild burns and is generally considered safe. Continue with cool compresses to help discomfort, wear loose, soft, breathable clothing to avoid further skin irritation and stay out of the sun entirely until the sunburn heals.

What Causes Skin Cancer

You can ask the therapy radiographers for an appointment time to suit you. They will do their best, but some departments might be very busy. Some radiotherapy departments are open from 7am till 9pm.

Car parking can be difficult at hospitals. You can ask the radiotherapy staff if they can give you a hospital parking permit for free parking or advice on discounted parking. They may be able to give you tips on free places to park nearby.

The radiotherapy staff may be able to arrange transport if you have no other way to get to the hospital. Your radiotherapy doctor would have to agree. This is because it is only for people that would struggle using public transport and have no access to a car.

Vitamin B3 Prevents Basal Cell Carcinoma And Squamous Cell Carcinoma In People At High Risk

In high-risk people who have already had a non-melanoma skin cancer, i.e. a basal cell carcinoma or a squamous cell carcinoma , taking vitamin B3 tablets daily reduces the risk of future non-melanoma skin cancer.

The largest trial of vitamin B treatment2 showed that it is an effective and low-risk treatment. At a dose of 500mg twice daily, taken for a year, the rate of new non-melanoma skin cancers was reduced by approximately 23 per cent:

• Basal cell carcinomas were reduced by 20 per cent. Less serious superficial basal cell carcinomas were prevented more effectively than more aggressive forms of basal cell carcinoma1.
• Squamous cell carcinomas were reduced by 30 per cent. This reduction was the same for superficial and more aggressive squamous cell carcinomas.

Some people get better results than this. In an earlier study3, nicotinamide was found to reduce non-melanoma skin cancer rates by up to 75 per cent, but these figures have not been reproduced across larger numbers of patients.

Vitamin B seems to work best in people with the highest levels of risk, i.e. those who have had many BCCs or SCCs previously2.

Oral nicotinamide is now recognised as an important part of the routine treatment of people at high risk of BCC and SCC and is about to become part of the Cancer Councils national treatment guidelines for BCC and SCC4.
