Dogs With Dry Itchy Skin

Stop Dog Itchy Skin Caused By Ticks

Dog Care : What to Do if a Dog Has Dry, Itchy Skin

For many of us, there is no scarier discovery than a tick on your beloved dog.

While ticks are disgusting and can look scary, knowing how to remove ticks is important for you, your family, and your pets.

If you simply cant remove a tick or are too scared to remove a tick, call your veterinarian immediately to see if you can have it removed in-office.

We have a Tick Key on hand at all times. We keep them in the car glovebox, hiking packs, and one on each leash. This tool makes it quick and easy to remove a tick with the mouthparts intact.

Before removing the tick, prepare a place to kill it. Place a little rubbing alcohol, or hand sanitizer in a pinch, into a small container or plastic zipper bag.

If you dont have a tick-remover tool, use fine-point tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin and pull upwards with even pressure.

The tick doesnt have a head to lose inside the body, but the mouthparts can come off and cause trouble later on down the road.

Steady, even pressure is your best bet to get the tick out whole. Simply keep pulling steadily until the tick is removed from the skin, then drop it into the prepared container of alcohol to kill it.

Sanitize the tick wound with an alcohol wipe or spray before comforting it with a salve to help relieve itching.

Are Certain Dog Breeds More Susceptible To Yeast Infections

Ear infections caused by yeast are more common in dogs with floppy ears, like cocker spaniels, basset hounds, golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, and poodles. Some breeds which have hair growing in the inner ear canal, like Schnauzers, are also more susceptible to yeast infection. So are dogs with allergies.

Ingredients To Avoid In Doggie Shampoos

You know to look at the ingredient list on your dogs food bag, but do you know to look at the ingredients of their shampoo? Some shampoos are made with some not-so-safe ingredients that pet parents should look out for.

  • Fragrance. Added fragrance can cause unnecessary irritation to a dogs skin. If a shampoos scent comes from a natural source, chances are itll be on the packaging.
  • Artificial colors. Brightly colored shampoos could contain unnatural and potentially dangerous dyes.
  • MEA/Cocamide DEA. This liquid is derived from coconut, but its chemically altered and added to some pet products. Pet parents should avoid this ingredient because it can cause cancer.

Chamomile And Herbal Tea Soaks

  • Chamomile, calendula, and green tea have properties that soothe and cool irritated skin and reduce inflammation, making them great additions in a dog bath for itchy skin. These soaks are best for dogs who have hot, itchy patches of skin that are at risk of getting rubbed raw.
  • If your dog is inconsolably itchy all over, fill up your tub or sink with warm water and let several herbal tea bags steep for three minutes. Remove the tea bags and let your dog soak in the bath for at least five minutes.
  • Alternatively, for smaller, itchy patches, steep one or two tea bags in about two cups of hot water. Once the tea has cooled down, pour it on your dogs skin as a quick fix, letting it drip dry without rinsing.

Try Baking Soda First

Effective tips for preventing and treating dry skin on dogs

A natural itch remedy for pets is baking soda. Baking soda is great because it’s versatile and is usually something you already have on hand. It’s very cheap and an easy option if your pet is suddenly attacked with severe scratching.

People have been using baking soda to relieve itchiness for centuries.

For bug bites or concentrated areas of irritation in your dog, you can make a baking soda paste with water, which is very simple.

After that, just put a thick layer of this paste over the irritated areas on your dog’s skin and let it sit for about 20 minutes.

Hang out with your pooch so he doesn’t try to lick the mixture, rendering it ineffective. After waiting, rinse it off with water. There should be no more dog itchy skin after that.

For dogs that have itchiness problems all over their bodies, prepare a slightly warm bath. Add one cup of baking soda to the tub and mix it into the water. Place your dog in the water and let him soak for a bit. Make sure you pour the water over his entire body for the best benefit. You can gentle massage the coat.

What Do You Do When Your Dog Has Itchy & Dry Skin?

If you have been asking yourself, “What can I give my dog for itchy skin if nothing else is working?” then coconut oil may just be the perfect remedy for your pup. Its high viscosity immediately soothes, while its other components help to calm the skin right away.

    • The best oils for dogs are those that offer the kind of viscous protection needed to create a natural barrier between angry skin and the environment. For this reason, coconut oil is among the best oils for canine skin, which is why so many products for pups use it as a key ingredient.
    • Many natural beauty products now contain coconut oil because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is also an excellent moisturizer for canines, as the oils can penetrate fur for direct contact with the skin. Dogs who are suffering from eczema, allergies, yeast infections, and even insect bites and stings can all benefit from direct application of coconut oil.
    • Put coconut oil in the fridge or a cool, dry place so it turns completely solid. For quick relief to dry skin, massage the oil into the coat and on the skin of your dog. Over time, you’ll notice your dogs coat improving, along with relief from constant itching!

Talk To Your Vet About The Best Shampoo For Fido

What you can do to soothe your itchy scratchy dog

Your dogs diagnosis will lead to the right treatment plan, so its important to consult with your vet quickly. If the dry skin is a symptom of a larger condition like a bacterial infection, your vet can usually treat both the dry skin and the condition causing it without much issue.

If the dry skin is caused by allergies, however, treatment can be a little trickier. A dog with food allergies may need an elimination diet to determine the ingredient theyre allergic to. Pups with environmental allergy symptoms can typically only be managed versus cured.

Depending on the cause of your dogs dry skin, your vet may recommend bathing them in a soothing dog shampoo. For example, these pet shampoos are usually a good option for managing environmental allergies.

Natural Supplements For Dogs With Itchy Skin

Dry, itchy skin is a nuisance for dogs, and pet parents are sniffing around for natural supplements for this common and vexing problem.

Treating pruritus, or itching, can be difficult since any number of things can cause it. Food allergies, seasonal allergies, fleas, ticks, mites, and skin infections are just a few of the culprits. To complicate things further, more than one thing could be making your pooch itchy. If you notice lesions on your dogs skin or the itching is out of control, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

And before you buy any supplement, veterinarians recommend taking a close look at your dogs diet.

Ideally, dogs should eat a diet thats relatively high in protein and low in processed carbohydrates, says Dr. Michael Dym, a homeopathic veterinarian based in Royal Palm Beach, Fla.

Before supplements, we must cut down on inflammation which often starts in the gut, Dym says. For dogs that eat typical commercial pet food, you can add every supplement known to man and it wont stop the itching.

Read the label closely on your pets food, advises Dr. Patrick Mahaney, a Los Angeles-based holistic veterinarian. Look for food that lists meat, poultry or fish as the first ingredient, and avoid food with ingredients labeled as byproduct and meal, with the exception of flaxseed meal.

You might feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of natural products promising relief from chronic itching. Here are a few common supplements recommended by veterinarians.

    Can Pruritus Be Cured

It depends upon the cause of your pet’s itching. Some pets will require intermittent treatment for the rest of their lives. These are extreme cases and the majority of itchy dogs respond very well to relatively simple treatment.

Dogs that suffer from seasonal allergies to pollens, molds, and/or mites may benefit from allergy desensitization injections or allergy shots. Allergy desensitizing injections should not be confused with anti-inflammatory injections that may be used to suppress itching.
