Causes Of Weight Loss In People With Cancer

Weight loss often starts with appetite loss. The underlying cancer and treatment-related side effects that may cause appetite loss are:

  • Changes in metabolism. Metabolism is the bodys process of breaking down food and turning it into energy.

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Depression

  • Pain

Talk with your health care team about any symptoms you have. Tell them about new symptoms or a change in symptoms.

How Do People Find Bcc On Their Skin

Many people find it when they notice a spot, lump, or scaly patch on their skin that is growing or feels different from the rest of their skin. If you notice any spot on your skin that is growing, bleeding, or changing in any way, see a board-certified dermatologist. These doctors have the most training and experience in diagnosing skin cancer.

To find skin cancer early, dermatologists recommend that everyone check their own skin with a skin self-exam. This is especially important for people who have a higher risk of developing BCC. Youll find out what can increase your risk of getting this skin cancer at, Basal cell carcinoma: Who gets and causes.

What Are The Causes Of Skin Cancer

There are genetic risk factors but skin cancer mainly occurs on skin areas that have had too much exposure to the sun. Sunlight, as well as sun lamps and tanning booth light, contain ultraviolet light. Despite what you may have heard from older sources, both types of UV light can cause skin cancer.

When your skin tans, its actually the bodys attempt to protect itself from these harmful UV rays. Even if you avoid getting a sunburn, youre exposing yourself to harm every time you tanand that includes inside a tanning booth.

Because of the effects of UV light, skin cancer usually happens on the parts of the body that are in the most direct sunlight: your head, neck, face, tips of the ears, hands, forearms, shoulders, back, chest, and lower legs. These might be called skin cancer hot spots, but its still important to look out for signs of skin cancer everywhere on the body.

Diarrhea Or Changes In Bathroom Habits

Does Losing Weight Make You Look Younger?

Occasional diarrhea usually isnt a sign of cat cancer, says Dr. Rocha, but if it persists or gets worse, bring your cat to the vet. Excessive litter box use, difficulty peeing/moving bowels, or blood in urine or stool are also potential signs of cancer, according to PetMD.com. Pay attention to frequent vomitingit could just be hairballs or upset stomach, but its also a presenting sign of GI tumors, says Dr. Zaidel. This is why cats do that weird kneading thing.

How Can I Prevent Skin Cancer

Some people have a higher chance of developing skin cancer than others do. This is the result of genetic and/or lifestyle factors like:

  • Light skin
  • Over 50 moles of any size
  • Being exposed to the sun for long periods of time, as with outdoor employment
  • A history of bad sunburns that caused blisters, especially prior to the age of 20
  • Using indoor tanning beds
  • A weakened immune system

Everyone should follow certain guidelines for sun protection, but those rules are especially important if you have any of the risk factors listed above. Here are some pointers when it comes to skin care:

  • Avoid being in the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm when the sunlight is most direct
  • Remember that getting a tan is a sign that damage to your skin has already happened, so dont tan on purpose and avoid tanning beds
  • Put on broad-spectrum sunscreen, with an SPF over 15, about 15 minutes before you go out in the sun
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours when youre outside, plus every time you swim, towel off, or sweat
  • Use skin protection even on cloudy days
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat that is at least 6 inches in every direction to protect your face, ears, and neck
  • Buy protective clothing that is comfortable in the heat this may mean loose, long-sleeved shirts and long pants made of tightly-woven fabric
  • Wear sunglasses that include protection for the sides of your eyes
  • Remember that you can be exposed to harmful rays from the sun even while youre driving or swimming

Does Cancer Treatment Cause Unwanted Weight Gain

Weight loss is a common side effect of some cancer treatments. But sometimes, the opposite happens and patients end up packing on the pounds instead of losing them.

So, what causes involuntary weight gain in some cancer patients? And what can patients and their physicians do to counteract this unexpected side effect?

We spoke with integrative medicine specialist Wenli Liu, M.D., to learn more. Heres what she had to say.

What are the most common causes of involuntary weight gain during cancer treatment?

There are actually several, but the biggest is probably steroids. These are prescribed to prevent inflammatory and anaphylactic reactions to chemotherapy, to reduce swelling in patients with brain tumors, and as a cancer-fighting agent used to treat cancers such as lymphoma/myeloma. The downside is that steroids also act as a major appetite stimulant, which can spur overeating.

Another common cause of involuntary weight gain is hormone-suppressing treatments, such as those received by patients with breast cancer or prostate cancer. Hormones have a tremendous effect on metabolism. Hormonal treatments for breast and prostate cancer can result in involuntary weight gain.

The third example is fear: the fear of losing weight. Sometimes, patients are so afraid that theyll become emaciated or unable to eat that they force themselves to do so while they still can, even when theyre not losing weight at all. Over time, that can lead to weight gain, too.

Weight Loss Versus Cachexia

Weight loss and cancer cachexia are different. Cachexia is a syndrome that is caused by the underlying cancer. Although weight loss is part of cachexia, it is not associated with the increased metabolism that occurs with cachexia. Therefore, weight loss as part of cachexia does not always improve with more calories.

How Does Nutrition Impact Energy Level

Cancer-related fatigue is often made worse if you are not eating enough or if you are not eating the right foods. Maintaining good nutrition can help you feel better and have more energy. The following are strategies to help improve nutritional intake:

  • Meet your basic calorie needs. The estimated calorie needs for someone with cancer is 15 calories per pound of weight if your weight has been stable. Add 500 calories per day if you have lost weight. Example: A person who weighs 150 lbs. needs about 2,250 calories per day to maintain his or her weight.
  • Get plenty of protein. Protein rebuilds and repairs damaged body tissue. The estimated protein needs are 0.5-0.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Example: A 150-pound person needs 75-90 grams of protein per day. The best sources of protein include foods from the dairy group and meats .
  • Drink plenty of fluids. A minimum of 8 cups of fluid per day will prevent dehydration. . Fluids can include juice, milk, broth, milkshakes, gelatin, and other beverages. Of course, water is fine, too. Beverages containing caffeine do NOT count. Keep in mind that youll need more fluids if you have treatment side effects such as vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Make an appointment with a dietitian. A registered dietitian provides suggestions to work around any eating problems that may be interfering with proper nutrition . A dietitian can also suggest ways to maximize calories and include proteins in smaller amounts of food .
  • If Youre Getting Radiation Therapy To The Chest

Radiation treatment to the chest may cause side effects such as:

    • Sore throat

Radiation can also cause other problems in the heart or lungs.

    Heart complications

Getting radiation to the middle portion of the chest can raise your risk of heart disease. This risk increases with higher radiation doses and larger treatment areas in this part of your body. Radiation can also cause hardening of the arteries , heart valve damage, or irregular heartbeats.

    Radiation pneumonitis

Radiation pneumonitis is inflammation of the lungs that can be caused by radiation treatment to the chest . It may occur about 3 to 6 months after getting radiation therapy. Its more likely if you have other lung diseases, like emphysema . Common symptoms of radiation pneumonitis include:

    • Shortness of breath that usually gets worse with exercise
    • Chest pain, which is often worse when taking in a deep breath
    • Cough
    • Weakness

Sometimes there are no symptoms, and radiation pneumonitis is found on a chest x-ray.

Symptoms often go away on their own, but if treatment is needed, it is based on trying to decrease the inflammation. Steroids, like prednisone, are usually used. With treatment, most people recover without any lasting effects. But if it persists, it can lead to pulmonary fibrosis . When this happens, the lungs can no longer fully inflate and take in air.

Be sure you understand what to look for, and tell your cancer care team if you notice any of these side effects.

    Unexplained Rapid Weight Loss

Unexplained rapid weight loss can be the sign of cancer or other health problems. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you see your doctor if you lose more than 5 percent of your total body weight in six months to a year. To put this into perspective: If you weigh 160 pounds, 5 percent of your body weight is 8 pounds.

According to the American Cancer Society, an unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more could be the first sign of cancer. The types of cancer often identified with this type of weight loss include cancers of the:

    Squamous Cell Carcinoma Warning Signs

How to Lose Weight Fast Seven Ways to Burn Fat for ...

Squamous cell carcinoma can take on many different appearances. The warning signs can include:

    • a rough and red scaly patch
    • an open sore that often has raised borders
    • a firm, dome-shaped growth

of skin cancer deaths. It often first appears as changes to a preexisting mole. Experts recommend looking for the ABCDE signs to identify moles that could be melanoma:

    • Asymmetry: one half of a mole or lesion does not match the other
    • Border: the edges are irregularly shaped or poorly defined
    • Color: the mole contains different colors, such as red, blue, black, pink, or white
    • Diameter: the mole measures more than 1/4 inch across about the size of a pencil eraser
    • Evolving: the mole is changing in size, shape, or color

Another warning sign for melanoma is the Ugly Duckling rule. Most normal moles look similar to each other. A mole that stands out from others should raise suspicion and be examined by a medical professional.

    Cancers With No Warning Signs

While many cancers have symptoms, some forms are more discreet.

Pancreatic cancer may not lead to any signs or symptoms until its progressed to an advanced stage. A family history, as well as frequent pancreatic swelling, may increase your risk. If this is the case, your doctor may recommend regular cancer screenings.

Some cases of lung cancer may only result in subtle signs and symptoms outside of the well-known cough. Certain types may cause increased blood calcium levels, a symptom which may not be detected without lab work.

Kidney cancer, especially in its earlier stages, is another type that may not cause notable symptoms. Larger or more advanced kidney cancer may lead to symptoms such as pain on one side, blood in the urine, or fatigue. However, these symptoms are often the result of other benign causes.

Type Of Cancer May Determine Type Of Cream

The specific benefits of chemotherapy cream to prevent cancer depend on the type of cancer a doctor wants to prevent.

For example, a 2018 randomized clinical trial found a 75% reduction in the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma in the first year following treatment with chemotherapy cream.

Although there was a slight reduction in the risk of basal cell carcinoma, the reduction was not statistically significant. Chemotherapy cream did not reduce the risk of keratinocyte carcinomas, but surgery did.

There is limited research suggesting that certain types of chemotherapy cream may help skin manifestations of other cancers.

For example, a 2013 study tested mechlorethamine cream in people with T cell lymphoma who had mycosis fungoides, which is a skin manifestation of lymphoma. The study compared a gel with a compounded ointment. The gel shrunk the participants tumors by 58.5%, and the ointment shrunk them by 47.7%.

The most common side effects occur at the site where the person applies the cream. They include:

    • pain, itching, or burning

Some people may notice flu-like symptoms. A person might also experience eye pain, itching, or blurry vision, especially if they get cream in or near the eye.

People who do not have enough of the enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase in their bodies are more likely to experience side effects such as nausea and vomiting.

Skin Cancer Diagnosis Always Requires A Skin Biopsy

When you see a dermatologist because youve found a spot that might be skin cancer, your dermatologist will examine the spot.

If the spot looks like it could be a skin cancer, your dermatologist will remove it all or part of it. This can easily be done during your appointment. The procedure that your dermatologist uses to remove the spot is called a skin biopsy.

Having a skin biopsy is essential. Its the only way to know whether you have skin cancer. Theres no other way to know for sure.

What your dermatologist removes will be looked at under a microscope. The doctor who examines the removed skin will look for cancer cells. If cancer cells are found, your biopsy report will tell you what type of skin cancer cells were found. When cancer cells arent found, your biopsy report will explain what was seen under the microscope.

A Physical Exam And Health History Will Be Taken To Look For Causes Of Fatigue That Can Be Treated

A physical exam will be done. This is an exam of the body to check general signs of health or anything that seems unusual. The doctor will check for problems such as trouble breathing or loss of muscle strength. Your walking, posture, and joint movements will be checked.

Blood tests to check for anemia will be done. The most common blood tests to check if the number of red blood cells is normal are:

  • Peripheral blood smear: A procedure in which a sample of blood is checked for the number and kinds of white blood cells, the number of platelets, and changes in the shape of blood cells.
  • Other blood tests may be done to check for other conditions that affect red blood cells. These include a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy or a Coombs test. Blood tests to check the levels of vitamin B12, iron, and erythropoietin may also be done.
  • The healthcare team will take a health history by asking about the status of your cancer and cancer treatments. It is important that you and your family tell the healthcare team if fatigue is a problem. You will be asked to describe the fatigue.
