How Is Skin Cancer Treated

Treatment for skin cancer depends on the size and severity of the skin cancer. Typical treatments include the following:

• Surgery. The best way to prevent the skin cancer from spreading or growing is to surgically remove it.
• Radiation therapy.Radiation involves beams of high-powered energy that can destroy cancer cells. Its often used if your doctor cant remove all of the skin cancer during surgery.

Treatments for skin cancer are most successful when the cancer is found early, particularly before it spreads to other organs in a process known as metastasis.

The cancer is more likely to grow and spread to nearby tissues and organs if its not detected and treated early.

A Lesion That Bleeds Or Oozes Pus

A non-healing lesion the bleeds or oozes pus could also be a sign of skin cancer. It could start as a sore that appeared without any discernible trauma, such as a cut or a burn, that doesn’t heal. It may or may not crust over, or it may partially heal, only to start bleeding again. This type of lesion may be a non-melanoma skin cancer.

You Experience Vision Problems

The second most common type of melanoma is melanoma of the eye, said Dr. Sapna Patel, a melanoma oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Just like youd have a mole on your skin, a spot can appear in the back of the eye. Doctors will only discover it when you get your pupils dilated during an eye exam.

Less than half of patients will actually have symptoms, Patel said. If you do have them, they may show up as blurry vision, floaters, a growing dark spot on the iris and other issues.

How Is Scalp Cancer Diagnosed

You might go to your doctor if you notice a suspicious spot on your scalp, or a doctor might notice it during a skin check. No matter how the spot is found, skin cancer diagnosis will happen roughly the same way.

First, your doctor will ask you about your family history of cancer, if you spend a lot of time in the sun, use protection in the sun, and if you use tanning beds. If you noticed the lesion, your doctor may ask if youve noticed any changes over time or if its a new growth.

Then your doctor will do a skin exam to look more closely at the lesion and determine if you need further testing. Theyll look at its size, color, shape, and other features.

If your doctor thinks it might be skin cancer on your scalp, theyll take a biopsy, or small sample, of the growth for testing. This testing can tell your doctor if you have cancer, and if you do, what type. A biopsy might be enough to completely remove a small cancerous growth, especially basal cell carcinoma.

If the spot is cancerous but not basal cell carcinoma, your doctor might recommend more testing to see if it has spread. This will usually include imaging tests of lymph nodes in your head and neck.

Targeted Drugs And Hormone Therapy

Some types of targeted cancer drugs and hormone therapy cause skin rashes.

Targeted cancer drugs called EGFR inhibitors are most likely to cause skin reactions such as a rash and itching. These include erlotinib and cetuximab.

If you have a severe rash, you may need treatment with steroid creams or tablets, or antibiotic creams or tablets.

Skin Cancer Screening For Dogs

At a time when your dog is normally quite calm, you can kneel on the floor or have them hop up on a bench or table to get a closer look. Bath time is also the perfect time to get an all-over look at your pet.

Starting with the head, check inside the ears, run your hands all over the face and jowls, and check the lips for new or unusual lumps, growths, wounds, or scabs. Next, run your hands all over the neck and chest, parting the hair to get a closer look at anything suspicious.

Run your hands from armpits to paws, and take a look at and between each paw pad and nail bed. Now you can check the belly, back, and flanks, making sure that the mammaries and groin especially are free from heat, swelling, lumps or crust. Finish up with the hind legs, buns, and tail, paying special attention to swelling or redness in the anal area.

How often you check your dog for skin cancer will increase as your dog ages, especially if they have been treated for a lump in the past. The earlier you find and treat a potential cancer, the less you will have to do in regards to surgery and treatment.

Treating An Infected Mole

If you suspect your mole may be infected and it hasnt improved within two days, its always a good idea to see a doctor. They can determine the right course of treatment after making a diagnosis. What To Expect After Skin Cancer Removal

Surgery is a common treatment option for skin cancer and is often performed in the dermatologists office. The type of surgery used depends on your type of skin cancer and how advanced it is.

Your doctor will numb the area with a local anesthetic before surgery. Once this local numbing medicine wears off, its common to feel sore. You may also notice that the surgical site appears red and is draining a small amount of clear fluid.

It is important to follow your dermatologists postoperative directions closely. You will receive instructions on how to clean your surgical site. You may also receive a topical medication to apply before covering the site with a bandage or gauze.

Natural Products Can Cause Side Effects During Skin Cancer Treatment

Black salve isnt the only natural treatment that concerns dermatologists. Vitamins, herbal remedies, and other all-natural products can interact with cancer treatment. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and St. Johns wort are especially worrisome. If a patient takes one of these while on chemotherapy or receiving radiation treatments, serious side effects can occur.

This could prevent potentially helpful treatments from becoming approved.

Lesions With An Irregular Shape

Check for lesions that have an irregular shape, or those that are asymmetrical. A normal mole or other typical skin characteristic will have a more regular shape with even edges. Lesions with uneven or ragged edges are suspect. If you draw a line down the center of the lesion, it should look equal on both sides. An irregular-shaped lesion could be a sign of melanoma.

Melanoma is very treatable when found early, but it can be fatal. The occurrence of melanoma has been rising over the last three decades, and while it’s most common in people over the age of 80, it can occur in people under the age of 30. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 73,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year, and more than 9,400 deaths will occur from the disease. Other warning signs of melanoma include a lesion that has a diameter larger than one quarter of an inch, is an uneven color, and has an irregular border.

How To Treat Skin Cancer

The treatment method that your dermatologist uses will depend upon the type of skin cancer that you have as well as the phase that the skin cancer is in. Usually, treatment options will include one or a combination of the following:

Cryosurgery In cryosurgery, your dermatologist will use liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin cancer, resulting in its death. This is an effective treatment option for small, stage one cancer spots.

Other treatment options may include immunotherapy, , radiation treatment, and chemotherapy that is applied to the skin.

If you notice a spot on your body that appears irregular, dont wait to have it looked at. The faster you act, the better.

Scaly Red Patches Of Skin

Scaly red patches of skin are a telltale early warning sign of squamous cell carcinoma. After basal cell carcinoma, it is one of the most commonly diagnosed types of skin cancer in the United States. A patch of skin like this on your body should be monitored closely. If you’ve been diagnosed with eczema, you may be having a flare-up. But if you’ve ruled out any kind of eczema and your scaly patch of skin isn’t going away, it may be time to see your doctor. In addition, these patches of skin may bleed or ooze and then crust back over repeatedly.

What Are The Symptoms Of Eyelid Skin Cancer

Symptoms can vary based on the type of cancer. In the majority of cases, patients will notice lesions on or around the eyelids. These lesions are typically not painful, but they will stubbornly remain even after attempted treatment with topical ointments. Non-cancerous skin lesions will typically go away on their own. What Causes An Infection
