How Does Hyaluronic Acid Help Acne

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular skincare ingredients due to its versatility. That means it works for acne too.

The humectant helps reduce the appearance of acne on your face by controlling sebum production. The acid works by balancing the oil on the skin, thereby keeping the pores from getting clogged and leading to breakouts.

Additionally, acne can be caused by skin lipid dysfunction due to exposure to environmental stressors or ultraviolet radiation. However, with the strengthening of the skin lipid barrier by hyaluronic acid, your skins lipid dysfunction returns to its normal state.

Moreover, hyaluronic acid also helps to glow up the skin. Consequently, acne scarring fades with the overtime use of a concentrated and right dose of hyaluronic acid.

Promotes Healthier More Supple Skin

Hyaluronic acid supplements can help your skin look and feel more supple.

Roughly half of the hyaluronic acid in your body is present in your skin, where it binds to water to help retain moisture .

However, the natural aging process and exposure to things like ultraviolet radiation from the sun, tobacco smoke and pollution can decrease its amounts in the skin .

Taking hyaluronic acid supplements may prevent this decline by giving your body extra amounts to incorporate into the skin .

Doses of 120240 mg per day for at least one month have been shown to significantly increase skin moisture and reduce dry skin in adults .

Hydrated skin also reduces the appearance of wrinkles, which may explain why several studies show that supplementing with it can make skin appear smoother .

When applied to the surface of the skin, hyaluronic acid serums can reduce wrinkles, redness and dermatitis (

How To Use And Apply Hyaluronic Acid

For hyaluronic acid to really penetrate the skins surface when applied topically, it has to be bioengineered to have a much lower molecular weight. Benjamin, who recently launched her own HA Hyaluronic Acid Serum , claims that chemists can do so while still maintaining the original hydrating benefits.

Shamban adds that in-office treatments can help hyaluronic acid penetrate more deeply into the skin. When combined with a Hydra Facial or SaltFacial, for example, a serum is infused into the skin for a better or more effective penetration of the smaller molecules than application to the top of the epidermis alone, she says.

For those looking to use hyaluronic acid as a filler, its best to seek out a doctors opinion first. Much like topical HA, injectable HA also mimics materials already present in our bodies. Injecting an HA filler in a gel form through a syringe into the various areas of our face, eyes, or other areas is accepted and remains with the body and is used like our other cells as a partner filling, volumizing that area, says Raymond Douglas, board-certified oculoplastic and reconstructive Beverly Hills surgeon and founder of the International Orbital Institute.

A tried-and-true skincare brand, Kiehls vitamin C serum lives up to the hype. Created with 12.5 percent vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, its proven to simultaneously firm skin and increase radiance.

The 20 Best Hyaluronic Acid Serums to Hydrate Dry Skin This Season

First of all, regardless of the climate, whether you live in a dry or a humid environment , never apply your hyaluronic serum to dry skin. Always leave your skin at the very least slightly damp and then apply your serum. If your skin is very dry and the air is also very dry, then leave your skin wet, not dripping wet, so that the hyaluronic serum doesnt slide off your skin, but still wet rather than damp.

When they serum has absorbed into your skin, which will only take a moment or two, then you need to apply a moisturizer over the top of the serum, as this will seal the hyaluronic acid serum into your skin. Some people with oily skin find that they dont need to use a moisturizer over the top of their hyaluronic serum, but for the rest of us, we really need to take this extra step.

For most people, hyaluronic acid is safe and non-irritating. Its recommended for use on all skin types.

Why Does Hyaluronic Acid Dry Skin

Hyaluronic acid dries out your skin when there is insufficient moisture in the atmosphere or its immediate surroundings. Hyaluronic acid needs moisture or molecules of water to retain moisture and hydrate your skin.

For instance, when you apply hyaluronic acid to your skin, it looks to its first moisture reserve which is your skin. When there is no moisture in the outer layer of your skin, it draws moisture from the deeper layer and dries your skin.

Furthermore, when you apply hyaluronic acid to your skin during dry climate conditions without sealing in moisture with a moisturizer, it again draws moisture from your skin because theres no moisture in the atmosphere.

The moisture hyaluronic acid attracts and retains in your skin is gotten from the atmosphere. When there isnt any moisture, it turns to your skin.

Whats The Science Behind Hyaluronic Acid

The benefits of hyaluronic acid on the skinhas to do with its molecular weight and concentration. In this case, size matters! The molecular weight refers to its mass, or how big the HA molecule is. This is measured in something called unified atomic mass units daltons, or kDa for short.

HA between 50 to 1,000 kDa is the most beneficial for skin, with about 130 kDa being the best, according to the most recent human studies. Anything higher wont make too much of a difference. Anything lower might cause inflammation.

How did we get this number? When you look at studies, youll see a pattern, but one of the most thorough studies looked at HA with different molecular weights, including 50, 130, 300, 800, and 2,000 kDa.

After one month, they found that treatment with 130 kDa HA was the most effective, increasing skin elasticity by 20 percent. Both the 50 and 130 kDa groups had significant improvement in wrinkle-depth and skin roughness after 60 days. All the other molecular weights still improved elasticity and skin hydration, just less so. You can read more about this molecular weight analysis from the original breakdown here.

Does Hyaluronic Acid Help Dry Skin

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful skin hydrator. It hydrates the skin by using its humectant properties to attract moisture from the atmosphere and retain it in your skin. Unlike other acids, this acid doesnt strip your skin of moisture.

Additionally, it doesnt compromise the skin barrier, if used correctly. On the contrary, hyaluronic acid replenishes moisture, enhances your skin barrier, and prevents moisture loss. This can help alleviate dryness and even keep dryness at bay.

Hyaluronic acid plumps your skin, keeps it smooth and supple. With consistent use, it can reduce itching, flaking, brighten your complexion, and improve the texture of your skin.

Can Hyaluronic Acid Make Dry Skin Worse

Hyaluronic acid may worsen your dry skin. When it strips moisture from your skin due to insufficient levels of moisture in the atmosphere, it makes your skin drier.

As a result of this dryness, your skin is dehydrated and the signs of aging are more prominent. The fine lines and wrinkles may appear deeper and your complexion will look duller.

Also, your skin may take on a saggy appearance, feel tighter and itchier. This itching tends to come with flaking.

What Is The Best Way To Use Hyaluronic Acid On Dry Skin

The best way to use it is right after you cleansed your skin when its still damp. For me, I felt like it would be a good idea to use it at night because thats when I wash my face so it will be nice and damp for proper application. I dont use a ton of products so this process was easy for me but I cleansed, applied the acid while my face was still damp, and then applied my favorite nighttime moisturizer. This is not really a product that if you use more then your skin is more hydrated, a thin even layer across the skin will work just fine. It is not intended to be used alone as it hydrates and your moisturizer will seal in that hydration, almost like frosting on a cake, a really moist cake that is. I dont recommend using it with your SPF as a lot of them have a water-resistant feature that doesnt play well. I dont use retinol products but I did read that its not best to combine them as they are best applied to dry skin.
