What Is The Trick To Applying False Lashes

When applying false lashes, it is important to firstly choose lash glue that doesnt irritate your skin. You should always patch test an adhesive for a minimum of a week before using it on your eyelids.

After finding an adhesive you are happy with, youll want to apply your chosen false lashes as close to your eyelashes as possible on your eyelids. The closer you can get the false lashes to your natural eyelashes, the better it will look overall.

Do be careful with your adhesive when applying the false lashes, especially when applying it so close to your natural lashes being too liberal with the adhesive might cause a spillover onto your natural lashes or your eyes.

If this does happen, rinse your eyes for a minimum of five minutes. For very strong adhesives, you may need to rinse your eyes for up to fifteen minutes using lukewarm water.

How To Choose The Right Individual Lashes For You

Generally speaking, false lashes are sold in short, medium, and long lengths and many brands offer single-layer or double-layer options depending on the volume you want.

To choose the right lashes for you, you’ll want to start by taking your natural lashes into consideration. The best way to ensure your individual lashes look natural and seamless is by matching them to your natural lash texture and length. If you have light, fine, straight, or short lashes you’ll want to stick with a short or medium length, and the single-layer clusters. If you have thick, wavy or curly, or long lashes, the double-layer or long option may be more suitable.

Another identifier to pay attention to is how the lashes are bound at the base of each cluster. Those with knots will have a little clump at the base of the cluster to give more of a base for the lash glue to stick to. However, if you have fine or light lashes, these knots can show up in your final look, so for most, the “knot-free” option is best.

Another item you may have to shop for: lash glue. Some packs of lashes come with the brand’s own lash glue, but the makeup artist favorite is Duo, which comes in clear or black. You can use clear if you are doing a more natural eye makeup look, or black if you plan on doing a more dramatic cat-eye or smokey eye to make sure the glue isn’t visible in your final look.

In a time when Kim Kardashian seems to rule the world, it’s not considered crazy to wear false eye lashes even to Pilates or the supermarket. But if applying a strip yourself feels intimidating, then don’t fret. We have expert tips from MAC Senior Makeup Artist Romero Jennings, as well as a visual manual below. Dig up your lash glue, grab a mirror, and get ready to rock a Katy Perry-like flutter.

Top Tips For Flawless False Lash Application

Step 1: Trim the lash to fit your eyes. Lashes are always extra-long so they can fit anyone, but most people need to trim them. We recommend trimming away the outer edge where the lashes are typically longer for a more natural look.

The lash doesnt have to fit the full width of your eye: you can cut them so that they will only fit the outer two-thirds of your eye, which helps to lift and open up the eye, plus it makes it easier for beginners.

Step 2: Wiggle the lashes a little to make them more supple, comfortable to wear, and easier to apply.

Step 3: Holding the lashes with a pair of tweezers, apply a thin layer of glue along the band of the lashes. You can apply directly from the tube or add a little glue to the back of your hand, and then lightly drag the band through the glue, to give it an even coating. Let the glue dry for around 10 to 30 seconds , and when the glue is tacky its time to go for it.

Step 4: Place a mirror on a desk or dresser so that youre looking down into the mirror this makes it easier than looking at a mirror straight on. Holding the lashes with a pair of tweezers , gently place the lashes as close to your lash line as possible. Use your tweezers to push the outer and inner corners down. When fitted, use your fingers to gently press them into place, and then pinch your natural and false lashes together to ensure they sit together.

Now To Apply The False Lashes

Place the falsies as close to your lash line as possible. I usually like to use my fingers for this step as I find it gives me more control, although you can use tweezers if you prefer.

Look down and gently press the base of the false lashes into your lash line. Once you have done that, you want to look up and gently press the underside of the lashes into your natural lash line. This creates the perfect blend between your natural lashes and the falsies.

Using a lash brush, gently brush the lashes. If you can see any separation between your natural lashes and the falsies, you can gently press them together with clean fingertips. If you do this, be gentle and avoid tugging at the lashes.

Lastly you can apply eye liner to cover any possible imperfections.

Are Fake Eyelashes Safe

Why this technique is BETTER than your false lashes!

As false lashes become more and more popular, many people are asking themselves, âAre fake eyelashes safe?â The answer isnât simple. Fake eyelashes shouldnât cause damage if applied and worn correctly, but there are risks that come along with wearing false lashes on a regular basis.â

Your eyes are extremely delicate! You should be careful when you put anything on your skin or around your eyes, but fake eyelashes require extra caution. Synthetic lashes combined with a strong adhesive pose an extra threat to your eyes and could trigger an allergic reaction, irritation, or other eye injury.â

Possible complications from misusing fake eyelashes include:

  • Allergic reactions to glue
  • A painful red bump on your eyelid or underneath your lash line, called a stye
  • Drooping eyelids from too much stimulation to your eyelids
  • Eye irritation or infection
  • Losing your natural eyelashesâ

Carefully read and follow the directions that come with your fake eyelashes in regard to cleanliness. If you use them incorrectly, you could be opening the door for dangerous bacteria or fungi to build up on your false lashes and infect your eye. There have been cases of temporary and permanent blindness as a result of misusing eye makeup.â

Formaldehyde is a common ingredient in fake eyelash glue that can cause allergic reactions. If youâre allergic to formaldehyde, your eye will hurt, itch, turn red, and begin to swell. A severe allergic reaction can temporarily interfere with your vision.

This is a game-changer: Let the glue dry for about 30 seconds. It’ll make the fake lashes less likely to slide around when you apply. It’s important to wave the lash around for a bit after adding the glue, says celeb makeup artist Ricky Wilson. This lets the formula dry enough to become tacky, preventing you from getting glue all over the place.

How To Apply Lashes: A Beginners Guide To Perfectly Placed Falsies

If youre wondering how to apply lashes for beginners, start with the basics, heres how:

Start by preparing your natural lashes. Fake eyelashes should be the last step in your eye-makeup routine. Once your eyelashes are curled and painted with mascara, you can get into the fake lashes. Place your lash glue onto your chosen lashes, and let it dry slightly before placing it on your upper eyelid. The easiest way to put on fake lashes is using tweezers.

If you applied eyeliner as part of your makeup routine, follow that as a guide when applying the flash lashes. Again, I use tweezers when applying the lashes to my eyelids for maximum accuracy.

If youre new to applying false lashes, it can seem daunting. When I first started using fake eyelashes with my makeup, I didnt realize how much work it can be to get the perfect lash. The before and after applying fake eyelashes is certainly worth it though!

Ive shared a step-by-step tutorial below to help you learn how to apply fake lashes.

Remove the lash strip, hold either end, and wiggle it. This just helps bend the lashes a little, making the band less stiff so it better conforms to the shape of your lid.

Measure. Nine times out of ten, the strip of lashes is going to be longer than it needs to be . Place it along your upper lid to see how much you need to snip off.

How To Apply Fake Lashes

Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg shares her golden rules with us. She suggests you curl your natural lashes and apply some mascara to create a great foundation for the lashes to rest on. When removing lashes from packaging, take your time or you will ruin the shape. Get as close to the bond and lightly pull out using your fingers or a tweezer, she says.

Before you do anything, I would measure to make sure it fits your eye. You never want the outside of the lash to be too long or it will drag your eye down. She recommends taking small scissors and cutting a bit off to match your lash line. Its super easy and that way the lashes are customizable to any eye shape. She says that lashes should never stop too close to your inner eye, think 2 millimeters from your tear duct, or else they will annoy you all day.

When youre ready to apply the strip, makeup artist Carly Jo says to apply a thin layer of lash glue to the band. We want the glue to get tacky within 15 to 30 seconds to ensure the longevity of the wear, so applying too much will just make it goopy and slide all over the eye, she cautions. After 30 seconds, apply the lash onto your lash line. The easiest way to see where youre applying the lash is to look down into a mirror versus straight forward. Its up to you whether you want to use tweezers, a lash applicator or simply your fingers to apply.

Key Takeaways On How To Apply Lashes

How to Apply False Eyelashes if You Don’t Have Natural Lashes

Hopefully, the steps above eased any anxiety you have when it comes to applying false lashes, but if not here are the key takeaways.

Do your eye makeup before applying your lashes because it will be nearly impossible to add eyeshadow after youve added your falsies. Be sure to trim the lashes to best fit your eye shape. Use less eyelash glue than you think youll need, and add more if necessary. Finally, use eyeliner to both guide your lash application before applying, and to cover any excess lash glue afterward.

Adding false lashes to your makeup look is a fun way to add a bit of glam to your everyday routine without committing to professional eyelash extensions.

There are plenty of eyelash brands and styles that are made simply to enhance your natural lashes, so if youre not looking for a dramatic look those are your best options. Otherwise, if youre like my mother-in-law, there are so many wild lashes out there to try. You better get started as soon as possible!

Applying Your False Lashes

There are numerous kinds of lashes available made to cater to different desired looks. Whether youre looking for something subtle and natural, dramatic and bold, or something fit for dressing up in costume, the right false lashes exist for your needs and may have different application techniques. Don’t be scared – it can take some practice to get right, but practice makes perfect.

Step #1: Curl your natural lashes

To create a shelf for your falsies to sit on, curl your natural lashes and apply mascara which will help support their weight.

Step #2: Cut the falsies to fit

Cut your false lashes to perfectly fit your eyelid. You can also divide them up into smaller pieces or thin them out to create a more natural, less chunky look. Another tip is to bend them into a C shape for a few moments to help curve them into a natural eyelid shape.

Step #3: Add your adhesive

Make sure to use a good quality adhesive, as the kind that sometimes comes with your lashes might not be best. Duo adhesive is a good brand. Youll want to trace a very fine line on each of the lash bands with the adhesive, not apply it to your eyelids. Wait a few moments for the adhesive to dry and become a bit tacky before applying. Even if your lashes come with some adhesive already on them, it’s a good idea to apply your own for a better quality stick.

Step #4: Stick them on!

Step: #5 Touch it up

Applying Fake Lashes: 9 Bonus Do’s And Don’ts

Now that you’ve got the basics of how to put on fake eyelashes down, here are 13 extra makeup artist-approved dos and don’ts!

When it comes to false lashes, one size doesn’t fit all. It would be AMAZING if every single pair of lashes was perfectly customized for you. But unfortunately, that’s usually not the case, and youre gonna have to bust out the scissors. Start by measuring the lash, says Ricky. Lay it down above your real lashes and then open your eye. This will give you an idea of how the lash will sit on your unique eye shape and how much to snip away. Trimming makes them more comfortable to wear and prevents them from popping up.

Who says you have to use the whole strip? Nobody! In fact, makeup artist and YouTuber Bailey Sarian suggests cutting the lash in half and applying it to just the outer corners of your eye. It creates a cool cat-eye effect, she explains. We love pairing this with some winged liner!

We usually buy lashes depending on length and volume. But, something else to look out for is a thin band. This is so important when it comes to wear,” Ricky explains. The thicker the band, the easier it lifts up! I tend to use the invisible band lashes whenever possible. If I’m working with a thicker band, I use extra lash glue to make sure it doesnt budge.

Individual lashes tend to look more natural. Strips are so much fun and can really glam up the eye, so I tend to use them when creating a smoky or graphic liner look, Ricky explains.
