How Does Acne Form

A Dermatologists Nighttime Skincare Routine for Hormonal Acne & Dry Skin | Skincare Expert

A common myth is that acne is an infection, so you can take antibiotics for a few days, and it is gone forever.

That is not the case at all.

Acne is, in many cases, a lifelong inflammatory condition that requires patience and long term treatment to keep it under control and prevent scarring.

There is no quick fix to get rid of it overnight.

Multiple factors cause acne to form. We have pores or openings in our skin. Hairs emerge from these pores. The pores have oil glands attached to them, which produce and expel oil, also called sebum.

When dead skin cells and oil do not get expelled but rather get trapped in the pores, this leads to a type of acne called comedonal acne or noninflammatory acne.

Comedonal acne consists of blackheads, which have open pores, and whiteheads, which have closed pores.

When bacteria get trapped along with the dead skin cells and oil, this results in the form of acne called inflammatory acne.

This type consists of papules , pustules , nodules , and cysts .

Nodules and cysts can be much more difficult to treat and painful and can lead to permanent scarring and discoloration of the skin.

Every month, I get inflammatory acne on my chin that also leaves behind marks. My skin concerns changed from reducing fine lines and brown spots to also battling hormonal acne.

Retinol is a great multi-tasking acne treatment for adults,” says Dr. Sobel. “It helps speed up cell turnover and regeneration and exfoliates keratinocytes, the cells on the outermost layer of the skin. It also works to unclog pores and keep skin looking youthful while minimizing and preventing fine lines and wrinkles. ” Three to try: Differin Adapalene Gel, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Adapalene Gel, and Sobel Skin 4.5% Retinol Complex Night Treatment. The Best Skincare Routine To Prevent Acne

The first thing you should do is take a good look at all the products you use on your skin and hair, says Dr. Jaliman. “The biggest mistake I see people making with their acne routine is that they use too many products and dont check the labels for ingredients, she says. Look for the words non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic or oil-freeon the products you use, which indicate that there are no oily, pimple-causing ingredients, she says.

Then, follow these six dermatologist-recommended skincare routine steps daily:

Amp Up Sun Protection

It is wise to wear sunscreen even if you are indoors to avoid your acne scars from darkening. The experts recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 and above for protection against both UVA rays and UVB rays. Your sunscreen should be non-comedogenic, which means the formula has been tested to not clog your pores and cause acne. You can also opt for a Vitamin C serum to amp up the sun defence.

Skin Care Habits That Can Help Clear Acne

Are you faithfully treating your acne but still seeing new breakouts? Your skin care routine could be to blame. Here are 10 skin care habits that dermatologists recommend to help you get the best results from your acne treatment:

  • Wash twice a day and after sweating. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, can make acne worse, so wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.

  • Use your fingertips to apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Using a washcloth, mesh sponge, or anything else can irritate the skin.

  • Be gentle with your skin. Use gentle products, such as those that are alcohol-free. Do not use products that irritate your skin, which may include astringents, toners and exfoliants. Dry, red skin makes acne appear worse.

  • Scrubbing your skin can make acne worse. Avoid the temptation to scrub your skin.

  • Rinse with lukewarm water

  • Shampoo regularly. If you have oily hair, shampoo daily.

  • Let your skin heal naturally. If you pick, pop, or squeeze your acne, your skin will take longer to clear and you increase the risk of getting acne scars.

  • Keep your hands off your face. Touching your skin throughout the day can cause flare-ups.

  • Stay out of the sun and tanning beds. Tanning damages your skin. In addition, some acne medications make the skin very sensitive to ultraviolet light, which you get from both the sun and indoor tanning devices.

  • Using tanning beds increases your risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75%.

  • Consult a dermatologist if:

Keep Your Hats And Headbands Clean

Another common culprit of forehead acne specifically? Hats, as well as headbands and headscarves that rest on the top of your forehead. Think about it: If you wear a hat for an entire afternoon, thats hours worth of sweat, makeup, oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria buildup trapped on your skin. Getting acne this way isnt just common. It even has its own name: acne mechanica.

Acne mechanica can be caused by hats, helmets, straps, visors, headbands, and especially masks, Dr. Rubin says. Yep, maskne mask acne is a type of acne mechanica. Any item that is touching the skin for a continuous period of time can cause acne mechanica.

This doesnt mean you should stop wearing hats and headbands, not to mention masks, of coursebut if you are experiencing a lot of forehead acne, make sure to regularly take off these accessories and give your skin a break. Also, be sure to wash them. You can throw most headbands right into the wash, or you can hand-clean the inside of hats with warm water and hand or dish soap. And for non-cloth masks, be sure to swap them out with fresh ones semi-often.

    Dos And Dont For Acne

    • Do not use a harsh face wash that makes your skin over dry: I see a lot of patients who first use harsh face wash and then put a cream to moisturise. Well, thats a disaster for acne-prone skin. Instead, use a face wash that removes excess oils from skin, so that skin feels soft and supple, rather than dry or stretched.
    • Do not wash face again and again: If your skin secrets oil even after using strong face wash, then you need a retinoid-based product to control your oils.
    • Do not layer products: Avoid over-layering of skincare products because they will clog your pores.

While OTC acne scar treatments might lessen the look of acne scars, there could be side effects, says Dr. Jeannette Graf, a board certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

    These possible side effects include:

Graf explains that these products can have a high percentage of active ingredients that can cause side effects for sensitive skin.

Its best to start by using these products in small amounts so the skin can get used to them and if youre concerned about irritation, test it on a small patch of skin before using, she says.

Yes, you read that correctly. At the first sign of a pimple on your face, you might be in a hurry to pop it or squeeze it to get it to go away, but you have to fight that urge.

Understanding Skin Care For Your Daily Health

The phrase skin care brings to mind three things: skin cancer, dry skin and a long aisle of beauty products at your local drugstore. But its more than a surface-level concern. While a skin care routine may sound like high maintenance, in reality, the steps for healthy skin are not only necessary, theyre easy to implement too. Investing early in the health of your skin, with regular skin care, will not only better protect it from the harsh effects of winter, but also keep you looking and feeling your best throughout the year, says Steven Nwe, DO, a dermatologist with Northwestern Medicine. The key to skin resiliency is knowing your skin and treating it well.First, youll want to take into account your skin type. The primary skin types are dry, oily or combination and while your skin may get drier or oilier based on the season, the majority of the time it should be relatively consistent.

Skin Care Routine For Acne Step : Gently Wash Your Face

You would want to get rid of acne when you see that ugly zit on your face by scrubbing it. Many people do it. But wait. The key is to treat it gently. So, get a dermatologist-recommended foaming cleanser and wash your face gently in the morning. If you have blackheads or whiteheads, get a doctor-prescribed cleanser with salicylic acid to clear the skins damaged top layer. Use lukewarm water to rinse the face. You may want to splash some cool water to balance, tighten, and refresh the skin.

When Should Prescription Treatments Be Added To Over

Adherence to a strong regimen can go a long way to keeping skin clear, but factors such as genetics, hormones or environment can still trigger outbreaks or more serious problems. Or, the side effects of the OTC products such as dryness, irritation or inflammation, cause some to discontinue use.4

Sometimes even the most targeted products arent sufficient to treat the acne breakout, especially if three months of use hasnt produced results. In those cases, its necessary to consult a dermatologist or other healthcare professional.

In cases of back acne where it can be difficult to apply topical treatments, oral medications can be more effective. As an example, in adults with more severe cases that include subcutaneous cysts, the topicals might not be sufficient. While retinol can have positive effects, the OTC options usually contain between 0.25 and 1.5 percent retinol to work on both the outer layer of the skin as well as penetrate the middle layer. A stronger formula prescription retinoid could be more effective but needs physician supervision.

Some dermatologists dont recommend OTC products because clinical research on effectiveness can be limited as are scientifically objective results of the additive benefits thus they opt for other treatments. It can be beneficial to use an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory medication for more severe acne or when other products have shown no results with extended use.
