The cancer was basal cell carcinoma that had grown to 10 centimeters on his scalp. Somehow this patient didnt mind living with an ulcerating, oozing and bleeding growth on his head.
Had he not sought treatment, he could have lived many more years barring death from an unrelated cause such as a heart attack or car accident.
With that all said, there is no data on what the record is for how long a person lived with an undiagnosed skin cancer.
Certainly you can imagine there must be many cases of people all over the world, living in undeveloped societies with scant medical care, let alone skin cancer awareness, whove been living for over 20 years with a slowly growing bump or patch.
This would describe basal cell carcinoma.
But a person will not get away for too long with an undiagnosed melanoma, as it WILL spread and cause symptoms of that spread, such as respiratory problems or ongoing severe headaches .

Where Do These Numbers Come From
The American Cancer Society relies on information from the SEER* database, maintained by the National Cancer Institute , to provide survival statistics for different types of cancer.
The SEER database tracks 5-year relative survival rates for melanoma skin cancer in the United States, based on how far the cancer has spread. The SEER database, however, does not group cancers by AJCC TNM stages . Instead, it groups cancers into localized, regional, and distant stages:
- Localized: There is no sign that the cancer has spread beyond the skin where it started.
- Regional: The cancer has spread beyond the skin where it started to nearby structures or lymph nodes.
- Distant: The cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the lungs, liver, or skin on other parts of the body.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Survival Rate
In general, the squamous cell carcinoma survival rate is very highwhen detected early, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent. Even if squamous cell carcinoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes, the cancer may be effectively treated through a combination of surgery and radiation treatment. While the newest melanoma drugs aim to decrease the mortality rate attributed to metastatic melanoma, most researchers agree that theres another, more powerful way to lower the number of people who die from the disease: keep people from getting it in the first place.
Despite all the encouraging research in therapies, what would make the most impact on improving survival is better prevention, says Swetter.
Tanning in a UV bed a single time increases a persons risk of developing melanoma by 20 percent, a 2012 study in the British Medical Journal reported. If indoor tanning starts in young adulthood before age 35 or if a person has had more than five sunburns, that risk is at least doubled, studies have found. While most cases of melanoma are in light-skinned Caucasians, dark-skinned people can also get the cancer they also have increased odds the more times they sunburn and the more time they spend in tanning beds. In all, researchers estimated in 2011 that about 86 percent of melanomas in fair-complexioned individuals are due to ultraviolet exposure.
So what can be done to stop these climbing rates? Queensland an Australian state with the highest rates of melanoma in the world launched massive public health campaigns beginning in the 1980s aimed at educating the public on the risks of sun exposure and tanning, as well as how to recognize early melanoma, Swetter says. Since then, theyve seen the rates of melanoma in Queensland start to drop.

Treating Stage 3 Melanoma
If the melanoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes , further surgery may be needed to remove them.
Stage 3 melanoma may be diagnosed by a sentinel node biopsy, or you or a member of your treatment team may have felt a lump in your lymph nodes.
The diagnosis of melanoma is usually confirmed using a needle biopsy .
Removing the affected lymph nodes is done under general anaesthetic.
The procedure, called a lymph node dissection, can disrupt the lymphatic system, leading to a build-up of fluids in your limbs. This is known as lymphoedema.

There are several tests your doctor can use to stage your melanoma. Your doctor may use these tests:

Risk Factors For Metastatic Melanomas
You cannot get metastatic melanoma without first having melanoma, though the primary melanoma may be so small its undetectable. Major risk factors for melanomas include:
- Light skin, light-colored hair or light-colored eyes
- Skin prone to burning easily
- Multiple blistering sunburns as a child
- Family history of melanoma
- Frequent exposure to sun or ultraviolet radiation
- Certain genetic mutations
- Exposure to environmental factors, such as radiation or vinyl chloride
Other factors have been connected with increased metastasis. In a 2018 study in the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia and a 2019 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the following factors were associated with higher levels of metastasis:

Stages Of Skin Cancer
