I Was The Last Person Youd Think Would Get Melanoma
When I heard the words, you have melanoma, I literally gasped. I was 22 and had just graduated from college. When I told my doctor I was planning to go to grad school, he said, Yeah, thats probably not going to happen.
I had Stage 3 melanoma, so it was in my lymph nodes, and my doctor told me it was very close to being stage 4, which is when it spreads to your internal organs.
For about two years before my diagnosis, Id had a lump near my bikini line that seemed to be slowly growing. A few months after noticing it, I went to my gynecologist, who told me it was nothing to worry about. Ill never forget what she said: If you dont bother it, it wont bother you. Its crazy to think now how far from the truth that was.
In fairness, I didnt look like the typical Caucasian woman with a mole. I didnt check any of the high-risk boxes. Yet even though Im black and had never been sunburned or stepped into a tanning bed, I still got melanoma.
Sometimes when I tell people I had melanoma, they say, Well, you just had a mole removed. I get so angry because I actually had to have all of the lymph nodes in my pelvic and groin region removed, and I had to inject myself with a chemo drug weekly. Then I had radiation, which caused a big woundkind of like a big burnat my surgical site. I also have lymphedema in my left lega condition where the lymph fluid isnt able to drain well, causing swelling and pain. I will struggle with this forever.

How Often Does Bcc Spread
Metastasis is rare with BCC, occurring in between 0.0028 and 0.55% of all cases. When it does occur, the lymph nodes, lungs, and bone are the most common sites of metastasis.
If BCC remains localized, there is a five-year survival rate of 100%. If BCC metastasizes, the outcomes are generally poor with median survival times ranging from eight months to 3.5 years.

My husband, Steve, was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in January 2012 at age 34. We have two daughters, ages 2 and 10. He had just started a job working from home and our life seemed to be going so smoothly. What Are The Causes And Risk Factors For Melanoma
Guideline # 5: Individual sunburns do raise ones risk of melanoma. However, slow daily sun exposure, even without burning, may also substantially raise someones risk of skin cancer.
Factors that raise ones risk for melanoma include the following:
- Caucasian ancestry
- Large, irregular, or funny looking moles
- Close blood relatives parents, siblings, and children with melanoma
The presence of close family with melanoma is a high risk factor, although looking at all cases of melanoma, only 10% of cases run in families.
Having a history of other sun-induced skin cancers raises ones risk of melanoma because they are markers of long-term sun exposure. The basic cell type is different, however, and a basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma cannot turn into melanoma or vice versa.
It is no longer recommended to do large batteries of screening tests on patients with thin, uncomplicated melanoma excisions, but patients who have had thicker tumors diagnosed or who already have signs and symptoms of metastatic melanoma may need to have MRIs, PET scans, CT scans, chest X-rays, or other X-rays of bones when there is a concern of metastasis.
