I dont often write about makeup probably because I dont often wear it. Actually, since I left O, The Oprah Magazine, and we slid into the vast sinkhole of a pandemic, Ive developed a F*ck it all! attitude toward makeup in general. With the exception of mascara and eyeliner, makeup is basically the last thing on my mind . But a loyal reader loyal to foundation, that is needed some help.

Q: What are some good foundation options for aging skin? Mine is quite dry, and foundation has a tendency to sit in my pores, making me feel like Im wearing a freaking neon sign that says, Im getting old! Im aiming to even out my complexion and diminish age spots and other signs of sun damage.

A: First of all, I just threw on a neon sign that says, Congratulations, winner! Youre getting old! But I understand why youd like to diminish the clues suggesting you have spent a significant amount of time orbiting our star minus sunscreen and a hat.

Making its grand entrance down the cosmetics aisle, please put your hands together for: primer! It seems that primer, dear reader, is what may be missing from your makeup routine. How do I know? I asked one of the most widely known makeup artists of all time, Pati Dubroff.

Best Foundation For Large Pores

Top 10 Favorite Foundations for Mature Dry Skin | MsGoldgirl

As you age, the pores on your face can start to look bigger, so many women search for a foundation for large pores.

The problem is that some foundations can actually settle into your pores and draw attention to them rather than having the opposite effect.

Its often best to use a primer under your foundation to give you a smooth base upon which to apply the rest of your makeup.

The Best Foundations For Mature Skin Chosen By Our Beauty Team

This beauty balm is our best foundation for mature skin overall, and for a few good reasons. For one, it covers up blemishes, sun spots, and uneven skin tone beautifully, but does so without feeling heavy on the skin. In fact, our tester was looking to learn how to treat rosacea and was dealing with bouts of flushing on her cheeks during testing. She was impressed with how well the foundation covered up her redness while still maintaining an ultra-lightweight feel.

Beyond that, this foundation contains skin-nourishing ingredients that mature skin will benefit from ceramides to protect the skin from external factors, hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture, and chamomile to soothe inflammation. One thing to note: The product is in an upside-down tube with a pump, so it’s a bit difficult to get the last bit out once you reach the end. We found that it was easier to twist the pump off and squeeze the tube to get everything out. We also wish it came in a broader range of shades to better suit more skin tones.

This medium-coverage foundation from It Cosmetics is skincare first, makeup second. It’s one of the best hyaluronic acid products in makeup form and is also formulated with an all-star list of ingredients like vitamin E to condition and aloe vera to blur fine lines and pores. Best of all, it layers nicely with moisturizer and primer and is meant to improve the look of your skin after two weeks of wear.

Mature Skin Foundation Tips

First, the hard truth…

The more product you put on your skin, the more likely it will gather and sit in your crinkles and wrinkles.

This is where the saying less is more really applies.

Its time to move awayyyy from the matte-finish, full coverage, layers and layers of foundation, and towards thinner layers, and lightweight, light-reflecting formulas.

Why? Because at this stage of life, our friends collagen and elastin are swiftly leaving the building, along with the plump layer of fat sitting underneath your skin.

Matte, powdery textures and opaque, full coverage formulas can really flatten you and make you look, well, a little one-dimensional.

And heaven knows, we mature-skinned beauties aren’t in the slightest!

Instead, choosing foundation formulas that give the skin vitality, life, dimension and luminosity will deliver a radiant and more youthful appearance.

In my mind, plumper, healthier-looking skin is the goal. Not coverage.

How To Find The Right Foundation For Your Skin Type

The 9 Best Foundations for Dry + Mature Skin in 2021

With hundreds of makeup foundations, it can be challenging to pick a foundation that will suit your skin. Sometimes you may find yourself alternating between a lightweight finish and going for full coverage. Luckily, nearly every brand has multiple shades, some upwards of 40. If youre not sure what will work with your skin, this section will help you.

Consider the intensity of your skin color Basically, this refers to how light or deep your skin is. For some, its medium, but for others, its somewhere between extremely light, light, and medium light. At the other end of the spectrum, it could light-medium, medium-deep, or extremely-deep. If youre not sure, try comparing your skin color to a model or a makeup artist online, then see how you fare.

Determine your undertone Take a look at your natural skin and see if its golden or rosy . If your skin is golden, you likely have a warm undertone, but if its rosy, its probably cool. If its a blend of the two , then its probably neutral.

Natural color vs. tan color Many people today arent always in their true base colors. For this reason, you want to make sure you match the foundation with the regular color of your skin. If you usually self-tan, take this into consideration. Its important to note that skin tone will vary from one area of the face to the other. Decide whether you want the foundation to match the base color or where the sun usually hits the skin .

How To Choose The Best Foundation For Mature Skin

BEST FOUNDATION FOR DRY MATURE SKIN

What kind of foundation should I use?

Mature skin demands a little more thought and care than younger skin. If your foundation is too thick you could end up with caked-up cracks where your laughter lines are. Too thin and any redness and irritation could show through.

A foundation thats specifically tailored to mature skin should have all your bases covered, and as long as you go for a light to medium formula you should be able to avoid any issues. A light dewy foundation will bring a glow back to your skin and will help to conceal wrinkles and lines.

Dont fall into the trap of applying a thick foundation to your mature skin. Mature skin needs moisture as its more prone to dryness, so a light moisturising coverage is ideal.

How much should I spend?

Your foundation is the base that your entire makeup look is built on, plus its directly interacting with your skin. So, while you can buy some cheap foundations that are pretty good, they arent going to give your mature skin everything it needs.

Yes, there are some exceptions, but on the whole spending a little more is a good investment in your look. A good foundation for mature skin will routinely cost upwards of £20, while a foundation with active ingredients, such as natural fruit and seed extracts that work to hydrate and moisturise your skin, will set you back around £40.

Best Foundation For Aging Skin Over 50

In your 50s, the aging process which started for your skin in your 40s will continue.

But, you may find that the menopause also causes changes for your skin.

A decline in estrogen levels can make your skin feel dryer, so choose a foundation especially designed for dry skin.

A gel texture foundation like this one from Chantecaille will glide on rather than becoming clogged around dry areas of your face.

How Do You Keep Foundation From Settling Into Wrinkles

First, prime your skin properly. Choosing the right skincare is key. I have been using serums under makeup for normal to combination skin and skipping moisturizer, as it seems to be the perfect balance. But drier skin types can benefit hugely from the layering of skincareespecially during colder months, says Baker.

Then, give your serums and moisturizers a few minutes to sink in. Youll be pleasantly surprised that your makeup will last longer, finds Baker, who also recommends applying a primer to even out the surface and fill in any creases. Sisleys Double Tenseur gel primer is an absolute go-to in my kit, as it creates an invisible mesh layer all over your face, she says. This step helps any base last longer and stay put with a flexibility and firmness you cant get with a regular moisturizer.

SKIN CARE REVIEWS

When people say mature skin, they are usually referring to the skin of people over 50, sometimes over 40. The truth is: once we hit 30, our skin begins to undergo quite a few changes, starting with producing less collagen. This results in our skin slowly but surely developing those telltale signs of aging, such as wrinkles, rough texture and sagging. Your 30s might also be the age you start to see more fine horizontal lines on your forehead or notice crows feet forming around your eyes when you smile. Still, skin in your 30s is not yet mature since the signs dont manifest as prominently until you hit your 40s and beyond. Which is why at this age, youre more likely to start showing interest in anti-aging serums and creams. But why stop there?

If aging is a concern, you might want to consider reevaluating your foundation as well. After all, you might be using foundation on a daily basis, and if you can have one specifically formulated for mature skin it could enhance your anti-aging routine. It makes sense especially since a lot of the foundations formulated for mature, aging skin contain special ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C that you would find in anti-aging serums promising to return that youthful luster to your face.
